Terminámos no TOP 10, estou satisfeito.

Baja Aragon: Two MINI on the podium

· Terranova and Hirvonen finish second and third respectively

· Przygonski comes sixth

On Sunday, one day after the finish of the Silk Way Rally, the Baja Aragon competitors also rolled over their finish podium. All three MINI that contested the event made it to the top 10, with two of them even securing a podium. Orlando Terranova (ARG) / Paulo Fiúza (POR) took their MINI ALL4 Racing to second place, right ahead of Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) / Andreas Schulz (GER) in their MINI John Cooper Works Rally. Jakub Przygonski (POL) / Xavier Panseri (FRA) in the second MINI John Cooper Works Rally finished sixth.

On Saturday morning, in the second special stage, Terranova took the overall lead but in the afternoon, his team-mate Hirvonen passed him for the lead – only to be defeated by Nasser Al-Attiyah in the final stage. “It was a tough battle right from the start,” explained Terranova. “The car was just great. Contesting the Baja one again was big fun and even more so as so many spectators lined the route. On Sunday, however, we unfortunately weren’t fast enough.”

For Hirvonen, it was the first event he contested together with his new navigator Andreas Schulz. On Sunday, he wasn’t able to defend his lead and had to settle for finishing third. “Being first on the road wasn’t that easy,” revealed the Fin. “Of course, it’s a bit of disappointing to finish third in the end. On the other hand, my first rally with Andi ran really well and I can say that we have begun our preparations for the Dakar.”

Meanwhile, Przygonski had a lot of bad luck, on the final day: gearbox problems and a puncture cost the young Pole a lot of time and he consequently finished sixth.

The next round on the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup calendar is the Hungarian Baja, held from 10th to 13th August in Hungary.

 Overall Result after Stage 4:

1. N. Al-Attiyah (QAT) / M. Baumel (MCO) Toyota – 6h 40m 20s
2. O. Terranova (ARG) / P. Fiúza (POR) MINI ALL4 Racing – 6h 42m 55s
3. M. Hirvonen (FIN) / A. Schulz (GER) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 6h 43m 26s
4. N. Roma (ESP) / A. Haro (ESP) Toyota – 6h 48m 43s
5. L. Poulter (ZAF) / D. von Zitzewitz (GER) Toyota – 6h 55m 05s
6. J. Przygonski (POL) / X. Panseri (FRA) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 6h 57m 25s

Classificação Geral – Silk Way Rally 2017

2. Anton Shibalov (Kamaz) +6m04s
3. Airat Mardeev (Kamaz) +23m12s

Ourednicek and Janacek in top 15 in toughest Baja Aragon

The crew of South Racing Central Europe, Tomas Ourednicek and his co-driver for the Spanish round of the World Cup, Mila Janacek brought the Ford Ranger Dakar home in the 15th position overall despite having a weekend packed with difficulties.

Baja Aragon has never been easy for Tomas Ourednicek, and this year he once again had his share of problems in the Teruel race, where he started together with Mila Janacek since co-driver David Kripal being unable to race in the event due to an injury. After taking a cautious approach on Friday to be able to get used to working together with Mila, Tomas started well in the first long special, clocking the 10th best time at CP2.

Unfortunately, after that he seemed to have run out of luck: first he got stuck in the dust of the competitor in front of him, then, short before the finish, he also got a puncture. The second special started well for the crew, they were on attack in the first part of the track but then they lost engine power and thus also speed. After Saturday, they occupied the 19th position in the overall standings. On Sunday, unfortunately, the problem persisted, but still they were able to not only finish the rally, but also to score a 15th place in a field full of Dakar’s top drivers and more than a dozen FIA priority drivers including Nasser Al-Attiyah, Mikko Hirvonen or Nani Roma.

“Baja Aragon has always been regarded as one of the most prestigious and toughest races on the World Cup calendar, and this year it was once again lived up to its fame. Since due to the injury of my co-driver David Kripal I had to start with another co-driver, we knew we couldn’t have too high expectations.

I would like to say thanks to Mila Janacek for accepting the challenge and take on co-driver’s duty in this rally. We have never made a single metre together before we arrived here, so we needed some time to get used to each others style, but he did a great job throughout the weekend!

Unfortunately, we had a puncture in the first long special and engine problems in the other two, so we weren’t able to attack in the way we wanted. Altogether, this was not the race of our dreams but we are proud of our split times in Saturday’s specials and of not making any major mistakes – the many crashes show how tricky the tracks was. Now the task is to find the cause of the engine problem and get the Ranger ready for the next part of our preparation for Dakar 2018” Tomas Ourednicek said after the finish of the rally.

Joan Barreda wins the Baja Aragon 2017

Monster Energy Honda Team rider Joan Barreda has secured his fourth victory in the Baja Aragon 2017 with team-mate Michael Metge making it onto the podium, repeating third place.

The Baja Aragon 2017 concluded today in Teruel with the victory of Joan Barreda and a podium place for Michael Metge. It is the fourth win in the Spanish race for the Castellón rider, who outclassed the opposition in each of the stages.

In the final stage of the 154-kilometre race, the Monster Energy Honda Team rider once again established the fastest time to become the victor of this 34th edition of the legendary Baja Aragón.

Team-mate Michael Metge finished in third place overall after a controversial five-minute penalty following a GPS error. It is the second consecutive podium for the French rider in Teruel.

For Monster Energy Honda Team the race marks the commencement of the racing season that will ultimately culminate with the 2018 Dakar. The next event will be the Atacama Rally in Chile with Paulo Gonçalves and Kevin Benavides, while Joan Barreda, Michael Metge and Ricky Brabec participate in the Vegas to Reno, in the United States.

SOUTH RACING’S RICARDO PORÉM SEALS IMPRESSIVE TOP 10 FINISH AT GRUELLING BAJA ARAGÓN IN SPAIN

· Last stage delays push Fernando Alvarez down from 11th to 18th

· Czech Ouřednīček and Germany’s Schröder reach Teruel in 16th and 17th

South Racing brought all four of its cars to the finish of the punishing three-day Baja Spain Aragón inside the top 20, with the Portuguese duo of Ricardo Porém and Hugo Magalhães leading the way in 10th position in their Ford Ranger. The event was the seventh round of this year’s FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies,

Fernando Alvarez continues to improve on every event that he contests and he and Argentinean co-driver Juan-Pablo Monasterolo brought their Conarpesa-backed Toyota Hilux to the Teruel finish in 18th overall after losing over 20 minutes on the final stage and slipping out 11th position.

Czech driver Tomáš Ouřednīček teamed up with Miloslav Janacek to reach the finish in 16th in their Ford Ranger, while the German father and son duo of Jürgen and Maximilian Schröder were classified in 17th position in a South Racing-run Nissan Navara.

South Racing had mixed feelings after the opening Prologue stage. Xavier Pons had damaged his DMAS South Racing Ford Ranger on a pre-rally shakedown and had not been able to take the start in Teruel.

“It was a difficult race for the team, but we managed to bring all the cars to the finish inside the top 20,” said South Racing’s managing director Scott Abraham. “It was obviously unfortunate about Xevi’s problems in shakedown, but things are looking strong. A big thanks to all the team. We still have 11 races to go this year and things are looking good for us in Paraguay at the moment. We are leading one and two…..”

Pons’s accident meant that only four of the five team cars began the 9.3km opening stage and Porém headed the challenge with the seventh quickest time amongst the 67 cars in the FIA section. Alvarez was 17th, Ouřednīček 22nd and Schröder 24th.

The first of the selective sections ran for 216.92km between Teruel and Perales Alfambra. Porém was the first of the South Racing drivers through the special in 10th overall and a time of 2hrs 56min 10.9sec, while Schröder and Alvarez were 14th and 15th and held 16 and 13th in the general classification. Ouřednīček slipped a place to 23rd.

The shorter second stage ran for 133.78km and Porém was again the quickest of the South Racing cars with the ninth fastest time, but eight minutes of time penalties dropped the Portuguese to 12th overall. Alvarez, Ouřednīček and Schröder carded the 13th, 17th and 20th quickest times and reached the overnight halt in 11th, 19th and 15th positions.

The action drew to a conclusion with a stage of 184.05km between Barrachina and Caude on Sunday. Porém set the ninth quickest time to deliver another solid performance for South Racing and 10th in the overall standings, but Alvarez slipped down the rankings after losing 20 minutes on the last stage. Ouřednīček and Schröder finished strongly to confirm their places inside the top 20.

OVERDRIVE’S AL-ATTIYAH CLINCHES SECOND SUCCESSIVE WIN IN SPAIN WITH REPEAT LAST GASP STAGE WIN

· Five-time winner Joan Roma finishes fourth; fine fifth for Poulter

· Harsh penalty drops Aron Domzala to 12th; Luis Recuenco out on last stage

Overdrive Racing’s Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah and Matthieu Baumel delivered a sensational final stage to seal a dramatic victory in Spain’s Baja Aragón, round seven of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, in Teruel on Sunday.

Trailing overnight leader Mikko Hirvonen at the start of the stage by 11 seconds, Al-Attiyah threw caution to the wind to win the final stage by 2min 25sec and seal a second successive victory for Overdrive Racing and Toyota on Europe’s leading Baja event. The result also strengthened the Qatar’s grip on the FIA World Cup in a virtual carbon copy repeat of the stage performance he put in last year to win the event for a second time.

Spain’s Joan ‘Nani’ Roma has won this event five times in the past on four wheels and he and co-driver Alex Haro brought the Monster Energy-backed Overdrive Toyota Hilux to the finish in a solid fourth overall.

South African Leeroy Poulter and Germany’s Dirk von Zitzewitz tackled the event for the first time together in a Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa car. Poulter delivered an impressive performance to reach Teruel in fifth position after overhauling Al-Attiyah’s closest title rival Jakub Przygonski on the final stage.

A harsh time penalty ruined Aron Domzala’s chance of finishing inside the top six but the Pole and navigator Maciej Marton recovered strongly to reach the finish in 12th position, Aron climbing eight places on the final selective section.

Spanish privateer Luis Recuenco teamed up with navigator Manuel Navarro to drive a Toyota Hilux supplied by Overdrive Racing. He held 22nd overall after the second stage, 18th after SS3 but failed to reach the finish in Teruel after hitting a rock and losing a wheel on the last stage.

Overdrive Racing’s CEO Jean-Marc Fortin said: “This was another remarkable stage performance by Nasser and Matthieu to seal another memorable win for Overdrive Racing against a very strong field. The result strengthens our championship challenge as well and is a second success for Toyota now on this rally.

“The rest of the team also delivered superb performances. ‘Nani’ and Leeroy were fourth and fifth and Aron would have been right up there without the time penalty for the tyre issue.”

The Overdrive Racing quartet began strongly on the 9.3km Prologue stage that took place on the outskirts of Teruel on Friday evening. Roma pipped Al-Attiyah to the quickest time by just 0.3 seconds, as Poulter and Domzala settled into fourth and ninth positions.

The meat of the action began on Saturday morning with a selective section of 216.8km. Roma opted to follow Al-Attiyah into the stage, with Domzala third and Poulter in eighth on the road. Argentina’s Orlando Terranova snatched the overall lead with the fastest stage time of 2hrs 42min 08.1sec, as Al-Attiyah and Roma were third and fourth quickest and held similar positions in the overall standings. The Qatari was a mere 22.6 seconds adrift of the leader. Domzala and Poulter were sixth and seventh overall.

The second stage of the day ran for 133.78km in the punishing heat of an Aragón summer afternoon between Celadas and Teruel. Mikko Hirvonen beat Al-Attiyah by just five seconds to claim the quickest time and moved into an overnight lead of just 10.2 seconds over the Qatari, with Terranova a further 10.1 seconds behind in third and Roma a distant fourth. Poulter held sixth position, but Domzala’s fourth fastest time also came with a time penalty of 31 minutes that pushed the Pole down to 20th overall.

“It was a very harsh penalty,” insisted Jean-Marc Fortin. “I am devastated by it. Aron had a punctured tyre and the rubber was on fire. He couldn’t put out the fire, so he left the wheel there. Then, due to a missing spare wheel, he was given this extremely unfair penalty.”

The fourth and final section took place on Sunday morning and ran for 184.05km between Barrachina and Caude before the ceremonial finish in Teruel. Hirvonen carded the target time of 2hrs 14min 34sec, but he was beaten by 52 seconds by Terranova who moved 31 seconds in front of the Finn in the overall standings.

All eyes were on Al-Attiyah’s stage time and the Qatari didn’t disappoint. He crossed the finish line in 2hrs 11min 17sec to storm to the top of the leader board and claim a second successive victory in Spain for Overdrive Racing and Toyota.

Roma was fourth quickest to consolidate fourth place and Poulter set the third fastest time to finish his first Baja in Spain in fifth overall after he passed Jakub Przygonski on the final timed section. Domzala finished the last stage just three seconds behind Hirvonen, but the time penalty had done the damage for the Pole on Saturday evening.

2017 SWR: Both MINI John Cooper Works Rally vehicles in the top 10

· Menzies and Al-Rajhi ninth and tenth

· 14th and final stage cancelled

The Silk Way Rally began and ended for the X-raid Team with a major dose of bad luck. Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and Tom Colsoul (BEL) lost a lot of time on day two, thus dropping out of the contention for the top positions. For Bryce Menzies and Pete Mortensen (both USA), nearly the entire rally went very well and they were fighting for a position on the podium. On the penultimate day, however, they got stuck on a dune and lost many positions. Due to the adverse weather conditions, the organisers cancelled the final special stage. Consequently, with 13 stages contested, Menzies / Mortensen and their MINI John Cooper Works Rally secured ninth place and Al-Rajhi / Colsoul finished right behind them in 10th. Today, the competitors will only roll over the finish podium in Xi’an.

Menzies and Mortensen were able to match the pace of the front runners right from the start. On day seven, the pairing in the MINI John Cooper Works Rally even won the stage and seemed to be on the way to certainly secure a podium. The US-Americans temporarily held second position in the overall standings but the penultimate stage made an end to their dreams: with about 30 more kilometres to go, they got stuck on a dune. “We hit the ground with the centre of the car and the car-jacks just disappeared in the sand,” Menzies revealed. “We had to dig for nearly three hours until we got going again. A real pity as we were on the way to making it to the podium. But that’s racing and this kind of things can happen in the dunes. We have learned a lot in the past days.”

Taking a look at every stage for its own, the 2017 Silk Way Rally was a successful event for Al-Rajhi and Colsoul. But the pairing slipped into a deep hole on day two and needed two hours to get out of it. And to make things even worse, they received a two-hour time penalty for having exceeded the allowed maximum time for the special stage. Due to this incident the MINI John Cooper Works Rally pairing dropped back to the end of the field but on the following days they worked their way back up step by step. In the penultimate stage, however, they also got stuck in the soft sand. “The car hit the ground at once and the hydraulic car-jacks also got lost in the sand,” says Al-Rajhi. “We had to wait for 45 minutes until a truck came to tow us out. Our bad luck in the early stages that cost us our chance of securing a podium was really annoying. But I could keep on gathering experience and I’m happy that we made it to the top 10, in the end.”

On Friday, the Baja Aragon in Spain was started simultaneously to the end of the Silk Way Rally. There, the Trebur based team also is represented by two MINI John Cooper Works Rally pairings – Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) / Andreas Schulz (GER) and Jakub Przygonski (POL) / Xavier Panseri (FRA) – and Orlando Terranova (ARG) / Paulo Fiúza (POR) with a MINI ALL4 Racing. On Friday evening, the Baja was kicked off with a nine-kilometre special stage (Click here for live timing).

 Overall standings after stage 14:

1. C. Despres (FRA) / D. Castera (FRA) Peugeot – 41h 46m 25s
2. C. Lavieille (FRA) / J.-P. Garcin (FRA) Baicmotor – 42h 51m 04s
3. W. Han (CHN) / L. Min (CHN) SMG Buggy – 42h 57m 54s

9. B. Menzies (USA) / P. Mortensen (USA) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 45h 52m 15s
10. Y. Al-Rajhi (KSA) / T. Colsoul (BEL) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 47h 15m 44s

Barreda consolidates Baja Aragón leadership with one day to run

Joan Barreda and Michael Metge wrapped up a great all-round Monster Energy Honda Team effort on day two of the 2017 Baja Aragón, dominating both special stages of the competition.

In the first of the two specials, Barreda rocketed through the 133.78 km course, opening the track before posting the day’s fastest time of 1:42’32. The only competitor to get anywhere near was Monster Energy Honda Team comrade Michael Metge, finishing some eighteen seconds adrift of the rider from Castellón.

The second special proved to be the longest and toughest of the day due mainly to the fact that the cars and trucks had previously carved up the track, leading to several close scrapes for Barreda. In part two the Monster Energy Honda Team ace was again flying to cruise home seven minutes ahead of Metge. The overall standings after day two show Barreda comfortably leading with a 7’28” surplus over team-mate Michael Metge and 9’27” ahead of third place Joan Pedrero.

The Baja Aragón 2017 concludes tomorrow with a single timed stage of 184 kilometres.

SUPERB SECOND OVERALL FOR OVERDRIVE RACING AND KEEOPOWER’S CHRISTIAN LAVIEILLE AT SILK WAY RALLY

· Binglong Lu and Zhitao He finish sixth and 12th overall in Baic and Toyota

Overdrive Racing and the Keeopower Team guided three of their five cars to the finish of the gruelling Silk Way Rally that started in the Russian capital of Moscow on July 7th and finished in the historic Chinese city of Xi’an on July 22nd.

The French duo of Christian Lavieille and Jean-Pierre Garcin led the way to the ceremonial finish in Xi’an in the first of three surviving Baic V8 Proto cars running under the Keeopower Team banner in conjunction with Overdrive Racing. Lavieille reached the podium in a stunning second overall behind the rally-winning Frenchman Cyril Despres.

The Chinese pairing of Binglong Lu and He Sha set several impressive stage times in the second of the Baic Motor BJ4Ols to finish in sixth position. Team-mates Yangui Liu and Hongyu Pan climbed from 13th overall at the rest day but retired in the Gobi desert after an on-stage collision.

The Chinese duo of Zhitao He and Kai Zhao ran an Overdrive Racing Toyota Hilux under the Boundless Yong Team banner and reached Xi’an in 12th overall.

Chinese driver Yong Zhou and French navigator Pascal Maimon were classified in sixth in the T1 category in an Overdrive Racing Toyota Hilux running under the BP Yong Team banner at the start of the ninth stage to Hami, but the Chinese rolled the Toyota into retirement in the stage.

Overdrive Racing’s CEO Jean-Marc Fortin said: “It was a very hard rally. At the beginning we had the rain and the mud and really hard conditions. It was a case of surviving the first week with a lot of kilometres of liaison.

“For Baic Motors, this is a fantastic result, second place. We could not have expected better. It’s very important for this new challenge and project to win Taklimakan (Rally) and to finish second here in Silk Way in the space of two months. It was a fantastic job from Christian and Jean-Pierre and also the whole Overdrive team who were building and repairing the cars.

“For the Toyotas, and for the rest of the team, being sixth overall was another superb result. I guess, with the exception of the big crash for Zhou it was a superb two weeks for everyone. We are happy to be at the end, because it was very long and demanding. This was a positive result after such a great challenge.”

After a much-needed rest day in Urumqi, following the trek across Russia and Kazakhstan, competitive action resumed on July 17th with a stage of 421km in a day’s route of 813.89km between Urumqi and Hami. It was the most dramatic day of the event so far: Frenchman Sébastien Loeb lost his outright lead after rolling his car and Yong Zhou was also forced out of the rally after rolling and damaging his Overdrive Toyota Hilux.

Loeb’s demise lifted Lavieille into fourth overall in the first of the three Baic Motor BJ4Ols. Team-mate Binglong Lu was pipped to the stage win by multiple Dakar winner Stéphane Peterhansel, but remained firmly inside the top 10.

From Hami, the route of the Silk Way Rally headed towards Dunhuang. The 10th day of action included a stage of 360.28km in a day’s itinerary of 517.53km. Lavieille, Lui and Lu were fifth, ninth and 10th quickest through the stage that was won by Italy’s Eugenio Amos. The result ensured that Lavieille retained fourth overall, Lu was eighth and Lui was 10th. There were further delays for Zhitao He in the Boundless Yong Toyota.

The 11th stage headed out of Dunhuang and offered 488.65km against the clock in a route of 783.84km to a night halt in Jiayuguan. The first section of 250km through a series of sand dunes was cancelled because the region has become a National Park, but the Baic V8 trio and Zhitao He reached the western limit of the Great Wall of China in strong positions to prepare for the rigours of the Gobi desert the following day.

The desert stage ran for 254.75km in a route of 483.79km to the city of Alxa Youqi. In what many competitors deemed to be one of the most difficult stages of their careers, Lavieille claimed a memorable stage win in his Baic to move ahead of Bryce Menzies into third overall. Lu was fourth on the stage and held seventh place, Zhitao He climbed towards the top 10, but Yangui Lui lost his position inside the top 15 after an on-stage accident.

From Alxa Youqi, the route headed towards the town of Zhongwei and teams tackled a penultimate stage of 318.66km in a day’s itinerary of 690.31km. Lavieille finished the special in third place behind Peterhansel and Despres to climb ahead of Wei Han and into second overall, as Lu was fourth fastest and moved up to sixth.

The final competitive section of the event was scheduled to run for just 100.67km in a day’s route of 716.46km between Zhongwei and Xi’an. But race officials cancelled the final stage because of heavy rain and results stood at the end of the section into Zhongwei, as teams headed directly to Xi’an for the podium.

PEUGEOT TRIUMPHS FOR THE SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR AT SILK WAY RALLY

• Cyril Despres / David Castera make it two out of two, as the winners of the 2016 Silk Way Rally triumph again this year, having held the lead for the entirety of the second week of the race. Their Peugeot DKR #100 eventually won with a margin of one hour and five minutes, over a total of 9599 kilometers those 4094 kilometers of which were on timed section.

 • Peugeot unbeaten on the 2017 Silk Way! A Peugeot was in the lead after every one of the 13 days of the Silk Way Rally, courtesy of Sebastien Loeb / Daniel Elena, Stéphane Peterhansel / Jean-Paul Cottret and Cyril Despres / David Castera. In total, the Peugeot ‘Dream Team’ won ten stages, with seven one-two stage finishes, as well as two one-two- three stage finishes.

 • Stephane Peterhansel / Jean-Paul Cottret eventually finished fifth, having won five stages. Their chances of winning were eliminated in the fourth stage, when they lost much time following a roll, having had to repair their car on the stage. • While the three crews had mixed fortunes on the Silk Way Rally, their Peugeot racing cars proved to be both fast and reliable. Introducing the Peugeot DKR Maxi, for its first competitive outing at Silk Way Rally, the Peugeot Sport engineers had the confirmation they needed that all their hard work had paid off. The technical evolutions are in the right direction, contributing to increased overall performance and giving the drivers added confidence.

PEUGEOT DKR CONFIRMS PERFORMANCE IN CHINA AFTER PREVIOUS SUCCESS IN SOUTH AMERICA

Peugeot has triumphed again on the Silk Way Rally, which took place from Russia to China over two weeks, having also claimed the event last year with Cyril Despres. The French brand set off from the start in Moscow with three cars: one Peugeot DKR Maxi for Loeb, and two examples of the current Peugeot DKR, which also locked out the podium on the Dakar Rally in January.

MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE FOR PEUGEOT DKR MAXI ON ITS FIRST COMPETITIVE OUTING

The Peugeot DKR Maxi featured a wider track that was 10 centimetres longer on each side, as well as other technical improvements that were being trialled on the Silk Way Rally, for the Dakar Rally next year. Sebastien Loeb used it to lead the rally at an impressive pace for the first week, claiming four stage wins in total. With an advantage of more than an hour, Loeb crashed the day after the rest day in Urumqi while driving off the main track to avoid a rocky river bed. His car tripped over a drainage channel, damaging it badly, and although the DKR Maxi was eventually able to be repaired, Loeb sprained a finger and couldn’t continue. Despite this misfortune, the French duo gained more experience and know-how of tackling long distance events.

DESPRES NICKNAMED “MR SILK WAY RALLY’’ AFTER CLINCHING VICTORY FOR THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW

Following Loeb’s accident, Despres took over the lead, having driven faultlessly from start to finish. He only had two problems, getting stuck in a hole during the first week, and becoming perched on a sand dune three days from the finish, but these were relatively minor issues that didn’t prevent him from leading the rally commandingly, to claim his second victory in cars, after a distinguished career on bikes.

STEPHANE PETERHANSEL: A GOLDEN GUARDIAN ANGEL
THE DREAM TEAM PEUGEOT TOTAL SPIRIT

Peterhansel, the winner of the Dakar Rally this year (and the most successful driver in Dakar history) had his chances of Silk Way Rally victory ruined in the first week, when he lost two hours after an accident. Nonetheless, from the bottom of the overall classification he fought back resiliently to claim a top-five finish, setting more fastest stage times on the Silk Way Rally than any other driver. Not only that, but Peterhansel performed a vital role as ‘guardian angel’ over Despres in the closing stages of the rally, helping his colleague to maintain his leadership by being on hand to assist in the event of any issues. This proved to be invaluable, with Despres able to drive securely in the knowledge that his team mate was on hand. This is ‘Team Spirit’ by Team Peugeot Total.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR TEAM PEUGEOT TOTAL

The Silk Way Rally was an essential part of Team Peugeot Total’s preparation for the Dakar Rally, with the team testing numerous technical and logistical solutions that will be put into place on the most famous endurance rally of them all in six months’ time.

 QUOTE / UNQUOTE

Bruno FAMIN, Peugeot Sport Director / Team Manager Peugeot Total “As we expected – or perhaps even more than we expected – the Silk Way Rally took a huge toll on all the competitors, with two of our cars being caught out by accidents. And they were in good company, because many other competitors faced the same problems. So, it was a very demanding rally but this is exactly what we were looking for, as we were looking for a challenge as we prepare our cars for the Dakar. In general, I was very happy not just with the pace but especially the reliability of our cars. Apart from a small power steering issue with Cyril, we had no major problems at all with any of the cars, which was very encouraging. The Peugeot DKR Maxi seems to be an improvement anywhere, with no disadvantages that we can tell so far compared to the current car. Congratulations to Cyril Despres and David Castera, both of whom performed faultlessly throughout the length of the rally to claim their second win here. While Stephane Peterhansel is ‘Mr Dakar’, I think we can now safely say that Cyril Despres is ‘Mr Silk Way’!”

Cyril DESPRES, Team Peugeot Total Driver / Winner of the 2016 & 2017 Silk Way Rally “It’s been a fantastic rally, a huge adventure, and I’m very happy to continue my progression as a car driver with another win here: on an event that I’m very fond of. To set off in Moscow and end up in China…it's really an amazing event. Throughout the whole of the rally neither myself nor David didn’t make any big mistakes, which was really the key to the victory, as well as having a reliable car. To be honest, I still think I have plenty to learn as a car driver; there’s still a gap in my speed compared to my team mates, which is something that I would like to make up. But I can see that I’m improving year on year, which is very motivating, as I know that the best is still to come. Now we look forward to the Dakar Rally, where we were third last year, so winning here is the best preparation.”

Stéphane PETERHANSEL, Team Peugeot Total Driver / 5th overall (cars) of the 2017 Silk Way Rally “Mixed emotions for me at the end of this rally. On the one hand, for myself, I am disappointed as I am a competitor and so the only result that really interests me is winning! On the other hand, I am very happy for Cyril and the whole Peugeot team for another victory here, and I’m also pleased that we were able to carry out the job of assisting him. Over the course of the rally we saw that the cars were quick and reliable and I think the Maxi is a step forward, although as Sébastien Loeb is such a fast driver, it’s hard to tell how much of the speed comes from him and how much comes from the car. In any case, it’s two years now that Cyril has won the Silk Way Rally and I have won the Dakar, so of course I’ll be really happy if history repeats itself again!”

Sébastien LOEB, Team Peugeot Total Driver “The rally did not end the way we wanted it to for myself and Daniel, but I’m very happy for the whole Peugeot team and especially Cyril and David for this important victory. It was also a great feeling to lead the event with a good margin during the first week, and I think the Maxi was a key factor in helping to achieve this, although it was more suited to certain stages than others. Now we will continue the development work, using all the important lessons we have learned from Silk Way, in preparation for the Dakar.”

Barreda takes the leadership after the Baja Aragón prologue

Monster Energy Honda Team got the 2017 Baja Aragón off to a flying start with Joan Barreda romping home in first place and team-mate Michael Metge, third in the curtain-raising event.

Joan Barreda – his Honda CRF450 emblazoned with the number one – scorched his way through the short nine-kilometre prologue to clinch victory with a six second advantage over the nearest second-place rival.

Michael Metge, who had finished third overall last year, also kept up a cracking pace on the Honda CRF450 RALLY, posting third on the day some fifteen seconds behind his Monster Energy Honda Team companion.

Tomorrow will see two special sectors with a total of 350 kilometres to run.

South Racing CE ready for 34th Baja Aragon

One year after getting the opportunity to drive the Ford Ranger Dakar for the first time, Tomas Ourednicek returns to Baja Aragon with mixed feelings. Beside being excited to be part of team South Racing, Tomas has to miss his co-driver David Kripal due to an injury, and relies on the skills of experienced navigator Mila Janacek for the Spanish round of FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies.

Baja Aragon has always been the highlight of the World Cup season, with more than 230 vehicles competing this year. With 77 cars in the FIA classification, the field is great not only in terms of numbers, but also in terms of quality: not less than 13 priority drivers are to line up at the start, including Dakar winners Nasser Al-Attiyah and Nani Roma, and WRC stars Mikko Hirvonen and Xevi Pons, that promises a fierce battle during the Teruel weekend.

“When it turned out that, despite all efforts that he and his doctors made, David wouldn’t be able to compete in Baja Aragon, I found myself in a very difficult situation. On the one hand, Baja Aragon is an excellent race that no one wants to miss, on the other hand, to start there with a new co-driver is a big risk. I feel very lucky to have Mila Janacek on my side for the event, his experience will help a lot, but we both know that we can’t have too high expectations.

The field is fantastic again, it’s always inspiring to compete among so many stars, but now that I am celebrating my first anniversary with the Ranger as part of such a professional team, with teammates like Xevi Pons or Ricardo Porem it will be even more special. Under the current circumstances the main goal is to improve my driving skills and test some novelties on the car, but of course, we will do our best to achieve a good result” Tomas Ourednicek said before the start.

The event starts on Friday with a 9.6 km Supersspecial, followed by three long specials of 216.8 km, 139.2 km, and 178.7 km each. The 34th edition of Baja Aragon ends with a prizegiving ceremony on Sunday afternoon.

VICTORY FOR PEUGEOT & CYRIL DESPRES IN THE SILK WAY RALLY AS FINAL STAGE IS CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER

Peugeot has secured victory in the Silk Way Rally with Cyril Despres and David Castera in the Peugeot DKR #100, after Saturday’s final special stage was cancelled due to bad weather conditions. The crews will still travel by road to the finish podium in Xi'an tomorrow, where the celebration will take place, but the race is over. Despres had earlier opened up a cushion of over an hour in the Peugeot DKR #100 over his nearest rival after setting the second best time on Friday’s 13th stage, which turned out to be the last competitive test.

After taking the 10th stage win out of a possible 13 for Peugeot, Stephane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret are set for fifth overall, recovering after they fell down the order because of a crash on the fourth stage.

 QUOTE / UNQUOTE

Bruno Famin, Peugeot Sport Director / Team Peugeot Total Manager “Huge congratulations to Cyril and David: they have driven well throughout and avoided major problems, which was not easy. It’s a good performance on a very tough rally! With just one remaining car in the run for victory from the race halfway point, it’s even more satisfying. This is the result of perfect teamwork. We managed the pressure brilliantly. The Peugeot DKR once again proved to be performing and reliable cars. I am proud of the team spirit we have within Team Peugeot Total and I would like to thank all the people who have worked hard to achieve another victory.”

Cyril Despres, Team Peugeot Total Driver / Winner of Silk Way Rally 2016 & 2017 “We started with the rain, and we finish with the rain, celebrating the victory in a very strange way tonight at the bivouac. I am so happy we made it again! I am proud of the work accomplished together with David Castera. I think we made it to victory pretty quickly, after both of us came from the two-wheel category. Thank you to Peugeot for giving me this great opportunity for my career. Thank you to the Peugeot Sport engineers and mechanics also, for building such a great car. I can’t wait to tackle Dakar 2018 with the Peugeot DKR Maxi. This is clearly my next goal now.”

David Castera, Team Peugeot Total Co-Driver / Winner of Silk Way Rally 2016 & 2017 “We did a clean rally with no major issues, either from a technical or a sporting point of view. I am glad we made it again! Hard work is paying off! We will take some good rest and then go back to testing. There is something even bigger waiting for us now, in the name of Peugeot DKR Maxi.’’

PEUGEOT PULL OFF A COUP IN THE DUNES WITH THE END OF SILK WAY RALLY IN SIGHT

• Stephane Peterhansel / Jean-Paul Cottret won the penultimate stage of the Silk Way Rally: the 10th stage victory for Peugeot from the 13 competitive days run so far. Their Peugeot DKR #106 also climbs up to 5th position overall after a complex stage 13, containing big dunes and several twists of fate for many of the competitors.

 • Cyril Despres / David Castera were second on the stage, just under 2 minutes behind their teammates. Both Peugeot DKRs finished 20 minutes clear of their closest competitors on a wide and open road. Thanks to a brilliant combined team performance, this was the seventh Peugeot one-two of the rally. Despres and Castera now have a cushion of more than 1 hour in the overall lead, which bodes well for tomorrow’s last stage.

 • The Peugeot DKRs still have to tackle the final 100 competitive kilometres, before the finish celebration in Xi’an tomorrow afternoon. It will be the second-shortest stage of the entire rally and clearly one of the most crucial, mostly raced in a dry river bed and on challenging tracks. Concentration and caution will be the key for the ‘Dream Team’.

 QUOTE / UNQUOTE

Stéphane Peterhansel, Team Peugeot Total Driver 1st of stage 13 / 5th overall (cars) “We had a very long and complicated stage today with lots of dunes so we were really relieved to cross the finish line. I feel tired now. I drove the whole stage together with Cyril, so that worked well. My co-driver Jean-Paul did a great job and we didn’t get stuck in the sand, so it’s mostly positive for us. In the end, here we are here, close to the end of the rally. This record of Peugeot stage victories is a kind of consolation for me. I had two goals from when I had the accident and knew I was not in contention for victory anymore: helping my teammates and winning stages, for fun.”

Cyril DESPRES, Team Peugeot Total Driver 2nd of stage 13 / 1st overall “Today went well but it was a very long day on the special stage, more than five hours of racing in total, which we were not really expecting. We knew the big dunes would be challenging and it seems that they have been shaking up the overall classification. I think myself and David did a good job, so we are happy! Our pace was good and we made no real mistakes on the dunes, which was the most important thing. I am grateful to Stéphane and Jean Paul, who have again been our guardian angels. I can start thinking about the victory. I am really excited to end the rally in the best way possible.”

DID YOU KNOW?

Xi’an (population 8.55 million), which hosts the rally finish tomorrow, is one of the oldest cities in China and capital of the Shaanxi province. Xi’an was traditionally the starting point of the Silk Way trading route for merchants coming from China, and it’s also home to the terracotta army of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who died in 210 BC. His terracotta soldiers are now housed in a dedicated museum, which is one of Xi’an’s principal tourist attractions.

 TOMORROW’S STAGE 14

Tomorrow’s leg is 716.56 kilometres long, but only 100.67 of those kilometres are competitive: the rest is formed of a long road section to the finish podium in Xi’an. The stage itself is short but technical, running through the bottom of a spectacular canyon, with navigation being challenging. While there are no particularly obvious hazards to trip crews up, this is obviously one of the most important stages for drivers and co-drivers to get right.

2017 SWR: Both MINI John Cooper Works Rally vehicles in the top 10

· Menzies fourth in the overall standings, Al-Rajhi tenth

· Two days to go to the finish in Xi’an

For the X-raid Team, the 2017 rally represents a rollercoaster of emotions. Yesterday, Bryce Menzies and Pete Mortensen (both USA) succeeded in working their way up to second position in the overall standings but today, they lost a lot of time in the dunes and dropped back to fourth. Nonetheless, they aren’t ready to give up. “We still are close behind,” says Menzies. “ Tomorrow there will be more dunes and don’t forget the special stage on Saturday.” Meanwhile, Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and Tom Colsoul (BEL) worked their way up to 10th place in the overall standings, yesterday.

12 of the 14 stages from Moscow, Russia, to Xi’an, China, have been contested and despite his long cross-county rallying break, Menzies still is a factor in the battle for the positions on the podium. Yesterday he even worked his way up to second overall by finishing fourth in the stage but today’s special stage was one of the most difficult ones of the event and Menzies had to cope with it as a day of learning. “We lost our way in the enormously high dunes and needed ages for finding a waypoint,” he revealed. “ Afterwards we got stuck on the summit of a dune. Later on we went over another dune and found the other cars but at that point in time we already had lost too much time.” So, he finished 10th in the stage.

Al-Rajhi and Colsoul finished third, yesterday, just two minutes behind the stage winners. “Things went really well for us but unfortunately, we had a tyre damage in the closing stages,” Al-Rajhi said. Today, the pairing worked for the team and waited in the opening stages for Menzies. Later, the Saudi got stuck for a short time and fell behind. “After CP two I saw Bryce behind us and stopped to then follow him,” explained Al-Rajhi who finished sixth, today. “Later in the dunes I got stuck for a short time and afterwards, I didn’t see him again. “Many competitors got stuck, today. It was a really difficult stage.” As many other competitors also had their problems, Al-Rajhi and Colsoul suddenly held the lead in the special stage. “I just didn’t know what was going on,” admitted Colsoul. “We were following the tracks of other cars and all of the sudden it was up to us to find the path.” Now other competitors followed the track of Al-Rajhi thus having the opportunity to gain time.

Tomorrow, the field will have to contest the penultimate stage of the 2017 Silk Way Rally. The stage will take the competitors and service crews from Alxa Youqi to Zhongwei. Another stage that features high and demanding dunes. On the final day, the Silk Way Rally armada will drive to Xi’an and the 100-kilometre special stage once again will feature sandy sections and smaller dunes.

 Overall standings after stage 12:

1. C. Despres (FRA) / D. Castera (FRA) Peugeot – 36h 31m 47s
2. W. Han (CHN) / L. Min (CHN) SMG Buggy – 37h 15m 09s
3. C. Lavieille (FRA) / J.-P. Garcin (FRA) Baicmotor – 37h 18m 24s
4. B. Menzies (USA) / P. Mortensen (USA) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 38h 07m 28s

11. Y. Al-Rajhi (KSA) / T. Colsoul (BEL) MINI John Cooper Works Rally – 40h 46m 30s

O holandês Bart De Gooyert juntar-se-á a Ton Van Genugten e ao especialista Bernard Der Kinderen a bordo do IVECO Trakker nº 306.

Classificação Geral (provisória) – Silk Way Rally 2017, após a 11ª Etapa

1. Dmitry Sotnikov (Kamaz) 33h58m25s
2. Anton Shibalov (Kamaz) +14m54s
3. Martin Kolomy (Tatra) +29m23s
4. Airat Mardeev (Kamaz) +31m59s
5. Artur Ardavichus (IVECO) + 1h54m59s
-----
9. Ton Van Genugten (IVECO) +8h33m26s

14. Gerard De Rooy (IVECO) + 215h28m34s

PEUGEOT DKR KEEPS PUSHING WITH TWO DAYS TO GO ON SILK WAY RALLY

• With just two days to go, Cyril Despres/David Castera keep fighting to maintain their healthy 45-minute overall lead over their closest pursuers on the Silk Way Rally, with teammates Stéphane Peterhansel/Jean-Paul Cottret watching their backs carefully.

 • The leading duo aboard the Peugeot DKR #100 had a scare on today’s 12th stage, when they got stuck on a sand dune and, a couple of kilometres later, lost power steering, meaning they were classified eighth-fastest on the stage. This cost them 20m30s on the stage but only 11m to their closest pursuer in second place overall. The Peugeot DKR #106 driven by Stephane Peterhansel was able to offer assistance, limiting the time loss on the stage, and was classified 10th on the stage. Another example of great team work, with team spirit high in the final push to the finish.

 • Tonight at the bivouac, the Team Peugeot Total mechanic crew will take extra care of the cars while the drivers will get some deserved rest, gather their strength and focus on another extremely tricky day over complex sand dunes tomorrow.

 QUOTE / UNQUOTE

Bruno Famin, Peugeot Sport Director / Team Peugeot Total Manager “While it’s not of any big concern in the overall picture, today’s incident showed that anything can still happen on this rally. Although Cyril dropped close to 20 minutes on the stage, he only dropped 11 minutes to the second-placed driver, as there were problems behind him as well. Obviously it was good that Stephane was running just behind Cyril, which shows our great team spirit: as well as the practical help that he can offer, it’s also psychologically comforting when you’re leading to know that your team mate is close by. From our point of view, we need to figure out why Cyril experienced a power steering failure too: he has sore arms and hands now, but the car was able to keep going and he will be fine for tomorrow after a good rest.”

Cyril DESPRES, Team Peugeot Total Driver 8th of stage 12 (cars) / 1st overall “It’s never over, is it? We had a hydraulic leak that meant that our jacks and power steering didn’t work when we got stuck. Normally we would have lost only a minute or so but we stopped and tried to fix it. All four of us – myself, David, Stephane and Jean-Paul – worked hard to find a solution but in the end we didn’t manage to: it’s not so easy in the middle of the desert. There were around 45 kilometres of dunes left to go and our only option was then just to drive to the finish. The car weighs around a tonne and a half, so driving it without power steering is far from easy. My arms and hands are sore but I’m very happy to be here now. And I already know that the Team Peugeot Total mechanics have a solution for this problem. It was really stressful as I knew that if we had another problem we could be stuck for hours. Honestly, it was one of the toughest days of my whole career. I’m looking forward to starting on a clean page tomorrow.”

Stéphane PETERHANSEL, Team Peugeot Total Driver 10th of stage 12 (cars) / 6th overall (cars) “Everything was going well until Cyril got stuck on top of a dune. We stopped to help him and it wouldn’t have been a big problem, but I think the thing is that during the process of using the jack, which runs off the same hydraulic system as the power steering, the power steering somehow got damaged. And then, if you have no power steering in one of these cars, it’s a big problem. So, we stayed behind him to make sure that he got through last 50 kilometres of the stage with no more problems. I am happy to help make sure a Peugeot will reach Xi’an on top. Apart from that, it was a very beautiful stage, typical of those I really like in rally raid.”

The Silk Way was originally a network of trading routes connecting Asia to Europe, named because of the silk (and horse) trading that took place along it. The route has its origins in around 250 BC and was extremely important for international trade.

 TOMORROW’S STAGE 12

The penultimate leg of the Silk Way Rally, from Alxa Youqi to Zhongwei, could provide the sting in the tail, as it’s known as ‘the Cathedral of Dunes’. The special stage distance of 318.66 kilometres is split into two sections, with tricky navigation and technical dunes. The crews won’t get the chance to admire the scenery, but it’s also one of the most picturesque days of the whole rally.

João Rebelo Martins anfitrião do Azeméis Super TT

PEUGEOT CLAIMS SIXTH ONE-TWO STAGE FINISH AT SILK WAY RALLY TODAY

• After stage 11 of the Silk Way Rally, Cyril Despres has gained few more minutes on his overall lead of the Silk Way Rally while his team mate Stephane Peterhansel won the stage. Despres was second, making it another one-two finish for the Peugeot DKR and the ninth stage victory from 11 days of competition.

 • Both the Peugeots ran reliably today again, at speeds of up to 190kph, in a varied mixture of race conditions including dusty tracks and wide canyons. After already completing 7442 kilometres with no mechanical issues, Peugeot Sport’s engineers are gathering vital information to be used on next year’s Dakar.

 • The Silk Way Rally is now approaching its closing stages with only three days of action left to go. However, the stages coming up are among the most complex and challenging of the entire rally.

Stéphane Peterhansel, Team Peugeot Total Driver Winner of stage 11 / 6th overall (cars) “Today’s stage was fine but really one of two halves for us: at the beginning we had some dust and then we were able to pass some cars and run in clean air for the second part of the stage, which was obviously much easier. The final 50 kilometres were really fun: wide gravel tracks with a little bank on either side so you could really slide the car and enjoy yourself. Tomorrow works out quite well for us strategically. With Cyril starting only two minutes behind us, we won't have to wait long for him to catch up and then we can drive together, which is always better in this situation, where he is leading.”

Cyril DESPRES, Team Peugeot Total Driver0 2nd of stage 11 / 1st overall “I took it fairly carefully today. As it has been the case for a couple of days now, we had a few corners in succession and a few junctions but there was nothing too tricky or rough or dangerous. So, it was a good stage that we were able to cover quite quickly, with no navigation errors. I feel reasonably relaxed and everything is going well up to now. I’m really enjoying the driving with the Peugeot DKR, we’re able to attack and the notes are coming naturally. We just have to carry on like this.”

In order to help tackle the sand dunes, the crew can control tyre pressures from the cockpit of the Peugeot DKR. By lowering the pressures, the tyre presents more surface area to the ground and increases traction: particularly useful on obstacles such as sand dunes. Then, when running normally, the tyre can be re-inflated from the cockpit to standard pressures.

 TOMORROW’S STAGE 12

Tomorrow’s stage, which is 254 kilometres in length, is far from the longest but almost certainly one of the hardest of the entire rally. There are complex sand dunes at both the beginning and the end of the stage, where it’s easy to get stuck. Linking the two sandy sections is a fast gravel road. These classic rally raid conditions call for extreme skill from both driver and co-driver. Starting the day in Jiayuguan, the crews will end up in Alashan Youqi.
