Fausto Mota 5º na etapa, já entrou no Top 10

Todos os pilotos CRN Competition melhoraram a sua classificação 

Fausto Mota teve hoje uma excelente prestação no Serres Rally, a mais importante competição de todo-o-terreno que se disputa na Grécia. O piloto de Marco de Canavezes foi 5º na etapa maratona que hoje se iniciou e com esse resultado entrou no Top 10 da classificação geral, onde ocupa agora a 9ª posição da Classe B.

  “A etapa de hoje correu mesmo muito bem. Já resolvemos o problema da autonomia e isso permitiu-nos ser 5º classificados e entrar no Top 10 absoluto. Cada dia que passa estou a ganhar mais confiança. Tive uns erros de navegação, mas é normal. A nossa Yamaha continua impecável e isso é também uma enorme ajuda”, salientou o piloto da equipa portuguesa CRN Competition no final desta quarta etapa.

 Fausto Mota cumpriu o setor seletivo (SS4 Road Trip to Paranesti) de 317km em 6h18m23s, numa etapa ganha pelo eslovaco Stefan Svitko que lidera a prova. Os quatro pilotos inscritos pela equipa CRN Competition melhoraram, todos eles, posições na classificação geral com Sebastian Buhler, 2º na etapa de hoje a subir para um magnífico 6º lugar. Fausto Mota subiu para o 9º lugar (Classe B), enquanto o espanhol Oscar Romero ocupa a 13ª posição, imediatamente à frente de Pedro Oliveira que foi o 7º mais rápido do dia, mas sofreu uma penalização de 13 minutos.

 A segunda parte da etapa maratona que amanhã termina terá um total de 255km e compreende um setor seletivo (SS5 Lekani) de 69kms.

Sebastian Bühler em destaque na Grécia

Piloto da Yamaha apenas batido pelo 2º classificado do Dakar 

Sebastian Bühler continuou a estar hoje em excelente plano no Serres Rally. Depois do magnífico quarto lugar na 3ª etapa o piloto da Yamaha esteve brilhante na 1ª parte da jornada maratona hoje disputada onde foi apenas batido pelo 2º classificado do Dakar o eslovaco Stefan Svitko piloto que lidera esta importante maratona de todo-o-terreno.

 Com este resultado o jovem piloto português, inscrito na prova grega pela equipa CRN Competition Pinhelworks, subiu mais três posições na classificação geral onde ocupa agora a 6ª posição.

  “Hoje foi uma etapa praticamente perfeita. Apesar disso perdi-me logo no km 10 e como saímos de 1 em 1 minuto o piloto de trás apanhou-me. Andei algum tempo no pó dele, mas depois consegui passar e fazer a minha corrida limpa, mas muito difícil de navegação. Aprendi muito, a mota está perfeita. O Fernando Pinhel faz um trabalho extraordinário”, salientou no final da etapa onde foi o 2º classificado.

 Sebastian Bühler cumpriu o setor seletivo (SS4 Road Trip to Paranesti) de 317km em 6h04m12s estando, na classificação geral a pouco mais de 5m para o 4º classificado.

 A segunda parte da etapa maratona que amanhã termina terá um total de 255km e compreende um setor seletivo (SS5 Lekani) de 69kms.

Fausto Mota mantém posição na Grécia

Pilotos CRN Competition confirmam Top 20 

Fausto Mota manteve hoje a sua posição na classificação geral do Serres Rally, a grande maratona todo-o-terreno que se disputa na Grécia. O piloto de Marco de Canavezes voltou a debater-se com problemas no depósito da sua moto e com isso perdeu algum tempo, mas cumpriu sem falhas os 173 kms da especial cronometrada (SS3 Ayrton Chalkidiki) do dia.

 Atual campeão nacional TT3, Fausto Mota gastou 3h38m54s numa etapa ganha pelo italiano Alessandro Botturi, piloto oficial da Yamaha, que gastou menos 1m32s que Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco da KTM, que lidera a classificação geral.

  “A etapa de hoje correu bem. Viemos para treinar e testar algumas peças que vamos utilizar no Dakar e voltei a ter problemas de autonomia de combustível, o que me fez perder algum tempo, mas já conseguimos resolver para as próximas etapas. Com o passar dos dias está a voltar a confiança e a nossa Yamaha está a 100%. Vamos seguramente fazer ainda melhor nos próximos dias”, salientou o piloto da equipa portuguesa CRN Competition no final desta terceira etapa.

 Os quatro pilotos inscritos pela equipa CRN Competition mantiveram, todos eles, posições no Top 20 da classificação geral (Classe B) com Sebastian Buhler, 4º na etapa de hoje a subir para um excelente 9º lugar. Fausto Mota manteve o 14º lugar, enquanto o espanhol Oscar Romero ocupa a 16ª posição, imediatamente à frente de Pedro Oliveira que foi o 11º mais rápido do dia.

Sebastian Bühler em 4º na Grécia (3ª etapa)

Excelente desempenho do piloto da Yamaha que subiu quatro posições 

Depois da etapa adversa de ontem, Sebastian Bühler voltou a estar hoje em excelente plano no Serres Rally mas, desta vez, conseguiu materializar o seu desempenho com um magnífico quarto lugar na 3ª etapa. Um resultado que lhe permitiu subir quatro posições sendo agora 9º da Classe B, aquela em que competem os principais pilotos.

 Numa prova de Todo-o-Terreno extremamente exigente ao nível de navegação o piloto da Yamaha terminou a etapa sem qualquer tipo de penalização numa altura em que o rally entra numa fase ainda mais difícil com uma dupla jornada maratona que terá lugar nos próximos dois dias.

 A 3ª etapa foi ganha pelo italiano Alessandro Botturi, piloto oficial da Yamaha, que gastou menos 1m32s que Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco da KTM. Os 173 kms de especial cronometrada (SS3 Ayrton Chalkidiki) foram cumpridos por Sebastian Buhler em 3h11m27s, ou seja, mais 5m08s que o mais rápido deste dia.

“Era um percurso similar aos nossos raides. Senti-me bem e consegui fazer toda a etapa sem erros. Estou muito satisfeito por isso e pelo resultado. Não arrisquei, mas consegui rolar sempre muito bem” salientou o piloto no final da etapa.

 O piloto da Yamaha, inscrito na prova grega pela equipa CRN Competition Pinhelworks e que em Portugal lidera o campeonato nacional da modalidade, cumpre na Grécia a sua terceira internacionalização tendo em vista uma eventual participação no Dakar em 2018.

 A primeira parte da etapa maratona que amanhã se inicia terá um total de 317km e será toda ela em setor seletivo (SS4 Road Trip to Paranesti).

Paulo Gonçalves: “Temos excelentes indicadores, agora é continuar a trabalhar”

Piloto português terminou com o 4.º lugar a sua participação no Atacama Rally, prova pontuável para o campeonato mundial. 

Paulo Gonçalves terminou recentemente aquele que foi o seu primeiro teste nas máximas condições para a próxima edição do Rali Dakar, prova que arranca em janeiro de 2017 de Assunção, no Paraguai, rumo a Buenos Aires, na Argentina. O piloto português disputou na passada semana a ronda chilena do “Mundial” de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno, o Atacama Rally, tendo terminado com o quarto lugar final da classificação geral a cerca de dez minutos do líder.

 O Atacama Rally teve início na passada segunda-feira, 22 de agosto, com um prólogo que definiu a ordem da partida, onde Paulo Gonçalves averbou o terceiro melhor tempo. Nas seguintes etapas, o piloto de Esposende procurou estar sempre entre os três primeiros, tendo mesmo chegado a ser o segundo classificado da geral, mas uma queda à segunda etapa provocou-lhe fortes dores abdominais que o impediriam de impor um maior ritmo até ao final. Ainda assim, “Speedy” Gonçalves ainda levou de vencida a quarta e penúltima etapa da prova, e no derradeiro dia liderou a “armada” até ao final mas acabaria por ser o quarto classificado final da tabela geral a 10min02s do vencedor da prova, o chileno Pablo Quintanilla, e a menos de meio minuto do pódio.

 Paulo Gonçalves e a equipa HRC voltam a testar para o Dakar 2017 por ocasião da última prova do “Mundial”, no início de outubro, em Marrocos.

 Paulo Gonçalves: “Agora que está terminada esta minha primeira participação do ano numa corrida do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis, fazer um balanço onde as coisas correram relativamente bem, não foi tudo positivo, obviamente, no segundo dia aquela queda que me provocou fortes dores abdominais, particularmente no segundo e no terceiro dia, limitou a minha performance mas devo ressalvar a vitória no quarto dia, o facto de ter aberto pista no quinto dia e ter chegado na frente. Foi uma corrida que do ponto de vista da preparação correu bastante bem, temos excelentes indicadores, agora é continuar a trabalhar, estamos a quatro meses do Dakar, temos ainda mais uma corrida de preparação pela frente já no próximo mês em Marrocos e vamos tentar continuar este caminho, tentar melhorar todos os dias de forma a chegar ao Dakar da melhor maneira possível.”

Baja Poland: Four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles make it to the top 10

· Holowczyc finishes second on home soil 

· Przygonski comes fourth

 Successful weekend for X-raid in the Baja Poland (26th to 28th August, 2016): all the four MINI All4 Racing pairings that contested the seventh FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup round made it to the top 10. Polish pairing Krzysztof Holowczyc / Lukasz Kurzeja was pipped in the battle for the win and finished just 1:21 minutes behind the winner, Nasser Al-Attiyah. Fourth place was secured by their compatriot, Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski, and his Belgian navigator Tom Colsoul, with the two Dutchmen Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar finishing right behind in fifth position. Boris Garafulic (CHL) and Filipe Palmeiro (POR) came 10th.

 The battle for the win virtually ended on Saturday morning when Holowczyz had to stop due to a flat tyre and lost valuable minutes. Particularly annoying as he later lost more time behind an opponent. He succeeded in winning all the four following special stages but in the end this wasn’t enough for making up for the lost time. ”Speculating where we would have finished without the flat tyre makes no sense,” said Holowczycz. “We raced at the limit and I’m satisfied with our achievement. After all, this was my first off-road rally in more than a year.” 

Przygonski also had to stop due to flat tyres and struggled with technical problems on Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, however, he displayed a lot of fighting spirit and battled his way up from fifth to fourth position. “This rally was packed with surprises,” said Przygonski. “We were stopped twice by flat tyres and in addition, we once were hampered by brake problems. Nonetheless, we succeeded in continuing close behind the leaders. Now we once again will go for it in Morocco to try to secure a better result.” 

Van Loon also had his problems with the perils of the Baja. After a trouble-free second special stage, he was hampered on Saturday afternoon by heavy understeer. And on Sunday morning, he got lost twice. “We finished fifth in the Baja but you have to take a close look at the special stage results,” stressed van Loon. Then you will see that our performance actually was better and that’s very positive.” The fourth MINI ALL4 Racing pairing, Garafulic / Palmeiro, struggled with problems on Saturday but caught up on Sunday an finished 10th.

Os quatro pilotos CRN Competition no Top 20 

Fausto Mota subiu hoje sete posições na classificação geral do Serres Rally a grande maratona todo-o-terreno que se disputa na Grécia e que é pautada por uma muito exigente navegação. O piloto de Marco de Canavezes cumpriu sem falhas os 252kms de especial cronometrada SS2 (Lailias Classic - Agistro - Bosdakas Crossing) e subiu para o 14º lugar da Classe B aquela em que competem os principais pilotos.

 O piloto da equipa portuguesa CRN Competition, atual campeão nacional TT3, aos comandos de uma Yamaha, gastou 5h58m55s numa etapa que voltou a ser ganha por Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco que foi segundo no Dakar 2016, com o italiano Alessandro Botturi, piloto oficial da Yamaha, na segunda posição.

  “Hoje a etapa já me correu melhor que a de ontem. Infelizmente tive um problema num depósito que me fez perder cerca de 15 minutos, mas tirando isso tudo funcionou bem. Vamos continuar a dar o nosso melhor esperando com isso evoluir também na classificação” salientou Fausto Mota no final desta segunda etapa.

 Os quatro pilotos inscritos pela equipa CRN Competition ocupam agora, todos eles, posições no Top 20 da classificação geral (Classe B) com Sebastian Buhler a ocupar o 13º lugar imediatamente à frente de Fausto Mota e o espanhol Oscar Romero, com Pedro Oliveira a ocupar a 19ª posição.

 O terceiro dia deste Serres Rally compreenderá uma etapa de 234km cuja especial cronometrada (SS3 Ayrton Chalkidiki) totaliza 173kms.

Sebastian Bühler na Grécia com altos e baixos

O jovem piloto da Yamaha ficou sem gasolina a 1km da meta

Numa prova de Todo-o-Terreno extremamente exigente ao nível de navegação, Sebastian Bühler esteve hoje em excelente plano no Serres Rally, mas acabou por ver a sua prestação marcada por um erro que lhe custou mais de quinze minutos e que o levou a ficar sem gasolina na sua Yamaha a menos de um quilómetro do final.

 O atual líder do campeonato português cumpre na Grécia a sua terceira internacionalização tendo em vista uma eventual participação no Dakar em 2018. Os 252kms de especial cronometrada de SS2 (Lailias Classic - Agistro - Bosdakas Crossing) foram cumpridos pelo piloto da Yamaha, inscrito na prova grega pela equipa CRN Competition Pinhelworks, em 5h50m04s não sendo conhecidas até ao momento eventuais penalizações. Um tempo que corresponde ao 13º lugar da Classe B aquela em que competem os principais pilotos.

 Na etapa que voltou a ser ganha por Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco que foi segundo no Dakar 2016 e com o italiano Alessandro Botturi, piloto oficial da Yamaha, na segunda posição, Sebastian Buhler salientou no final da etapa que “estava tudo a correr bastante bem, não tinha tido muitas falhas na navegação e sabia que estaria bem na classificação geral quando tive um engano daqueles grandes. Andei mais de 15 minutos perdido até retomar a corrida e se isso não bastasse, a menos de um quilómetro para o final fiquei sem gasolina na moto. Continuo a aprender. A prova é excelente para isso e espero que amanhã me corra melhor”.

 O terceiro dia deste Serres Rally compreende uma etapa de 234km cuja especial cronometrada (SS3 Ayrton Chalkidiki) totaliza 173kms.

Equipas muito interessadas na Baja TT de Idanha-a-Nova

Inscrições prosseguem a bom ritmo 

A Baja TT de Idanha-a-Nova marca a rentrée competitiva do todo-o-terreno em Portugal e antevê-se uma grande celebração da modalidade durante os dias 9 e 10 de Setembro. O interesse é grande e quando ainda faltam quase três semanas para a sua realização, já há quase uma centena de inscritos e os principais nomes da disciplina já garantiram presença.

 Pontuável para os principais campeonatos nacionais de carros, motos, quads e UTV-Buggy e também para algumas competições internacionais, como a Baja FIM Cup e o Campeonato Europeu de Bajas, a Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova está a despertar grande interesse entre pilotos e equipas que já asseguraram a sua participação.

 Na Escuderia Castelo Branco trabalha-se com afinco para apresentar uma competição ao melhor nível, tal como tem sido sempre a busca da organização. Para o director da prova reservada aos automóveis, a preocupação para 2016 foi apresentar um figurino com novidades mas que mantivesse a identidade da Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova.

  “Vamos continuar a ter um percurso muito rolante, com bastantes zonas rápidas que embora não tão técnicas, exigem bastante pilotagem por parte dos concorrentes. Também procurámos acrescentar quilometragem à corrida e conseguimos fazê-lo, com partes totalmente novas na zona da freguesia do Rosmaninhal, em Idanha-a-Nova, e no concelho de Penamacor. O primeiro sector conta com 140 quilómetros e o segundo chega aos 190, terminando a prova na Zebreira ”, explicou.

 Já o responsável pela competição das motos, dos quads e dos UTV-Buggy, Hélder Esteves, destaca a forma como a lista de inscritos tem crescido e apresenta grande qualidade. “Temos sentido um grande interesse pela Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova, o que nos deixa muito satisfeitos e entusiasmados. Já fomos contactados por algumas formações estrangeiras de primeiro plano no panorama da disciplina e isso é sinal do interesse despertado também lá fora. Vamos ter mais um sector selectivo para motos, quads e Buggy-UTV logo no primeiro dia a seguir ao prólogo. Esse sector tem a particularidade de a partida ser na Zebreira.”

 A quinta jornada dos principais campeonatos de Portugal realiza-se com a luta pelo primeiro lugar ao rubro. Nos automóveis, a nível absoluto, Nuno Matos lidera uma competição em que João Ramos e Miguel Barbosa, actual campeão, procuram destronar o piloto do Opel Mokka Proto. Os dois primeiros estão separados por apenas nove pontos e tudo pode acontecer nos sectores selectivos da Beira Interior desenhados nos concelhos de Idanha-a-Nova e de Penamacor.

 Nas motos, quads e UTV-Buggy também há lutas muito interessantes. Sebastian Buhler lidera o campeonato nas duas rodas mas, tal como nos automóveis, tem nove pontos de vantagem para o campeão em título, António Maio. Nos quads, Arnaldo Martins entra em competição com apenas dois pontos a mais do que Roberto Borrego e nos UTV-Buggy, João Dias é o líder da classificação à entrada da Baja TT Idanha-a-Nova com uma vantagem de seis pontos sobre Ricardo Carvalho.

Fausto Mota com arranque cauteloso na Grécia

CRN Competition inscreve quatro pilotos 

Arrancou hoje o Serres Rally, uma maratona todo-o-terreno disputada na Grécia e que marca o regresso às competições por parte de Fausto Mota, o atual campeão nacional TT3, depois do seu acidente no Merzouga Rally.

 O piloto de Marco de Canavezes teve um arranque cauteloso, mas declarou no final do prólogo hoje disputado que “senti-me bem da lesão que sofri. Pouco andei de mota e este foi apenas o primeiro dia, a corrida é muito longa, mas as pistas são boas. Vamos ver como nos corre amanhã”.

 O piloto da equipa portuguesa CRN Competition foi o 13º mais rápido, mas uma penalização de sete minutos por excesso de velocidade, relegou-o para uma posição mais recuada na classificação deste primeiro dia de corrida.

 Numa especial ganha por Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco que foi segundo no Dakar 2016, o jovem Sebastian Buhler é, dos pilotos inscritos pela equipa CRN Competition, quem ocupa melhor posição. Foi o sexto mais rápido no prólogo onde, tal como os seus companheiros de equipa, também sofreu uma penalização por excesso de velocidade (seis minutos) o que o colocou em 10º da Classe B, onde também participam Pedro Oliveira (23º) e o espanhol Oscar Romero (31º).

 Amanhã cumpre-se o segundo dia deste Serres Rally. A etapa terá 267km e o SS2 Lailias Classic - Agistro - Bosdakas Crossing terá 252kms de especial cronometrada.

Sebastian Bühler arranca perto do Top 10

Atual líder do Campeonato Nacional de Todo-o-Terreno com apenas 21 anos de idade, Sebastian Bühler está na Grécia a cumprir a sua terceira internacionalização. Depois de uma primeira experiência nas pistas marroquinas do Merzouga Rally e de uma abordagem à mitifica Baja Aragón em Espanha, o jovem piloto da Yamaha está agora na Grécia para enfrentar uma longa maratona com cinco dias de competição onde hoje averbou o 11º lugar no prólogo.

 Sebastian Buhler foi o sexto mais rápido a cumprir um percurso de 36 quilómetros muito exigente em navegação, como aliás prometem ser todas as etapas do Serres Rally, baixando depois para o 11º lugar na sequência de seis minutos de penalização numa especial ganha por Stefan Svitko, o eslovaco que foi segundo no Dakar 2016.

  “É uma experiência completamente diferente, mas faz parte do meu plano de preparação com vista a uma eventual participação no Dakar em 2018. Tentei andar rápido, mas sempre com muita atenção à navegação para não cometer erros. Estou a dar os primeiros passos neste tipo de provas e tenho de fazer muitos quilómetros para ganhar experiência” salientou o piloto no final do primeiro dia de corrida no Serres Rally.

 Amanhã cumpre-se o segundo dia deste Serres Rally. A etapa terá 267km e o SS2 Lailias Classic - Agistro - Bosdakas Crossing terá 252kms de especial cronometrada.

SPANIARD PONS SETS IMPRESSIVE STAGE TIMES AS DEVELOPMENT OF DMAS SOUTH RACING’S FORD RANGER CONTINUES AT BAJA POLAND

· Czech duo of Ouřednīček and Vaculīc reach Szczecin finish in 12th place 

Spaniard Xavier Pons produced another impressive performance in his DMAS South Racing Ford Ranger at Columna Medica Baja Poland, round seven of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, but a pair of drive shaft breakages on the penultimate stage deprived the former WRC star of a top six finish on Sunday.

 Partnered by Argentinean navigator Ronnie Graue for the first time, Pons gained in confidence as the Szczecin-based event progressed and his times began to improve markedly. He was running as the third fastest driver in the sixth stage behind eventual winner Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah and local hero Krzysztof Holowczyc before the technical issue forced him out of a top six position in the overall standings.

 The Czech pairing of Tomáš Ouřednīček and Pavel Vaculīc crewed a second DMAS South Racing Ford Ranger and climbed gradually through the field to reach the finish in 12th overall.

  “I suppose that’s racing today with the drive shaft failures, but that can happen and it doesn’t detract from a very positive performance by Xevi and Ronnie that saw them challenging hard for top three stage times,” said South Racing’s managing director Scott Abraham.

  “It was a very good race, demanding and great experience for the entire team. We have very positive feed back from each of the stages and the performance of the car was excellent. This morning, Xevi was setting top three split times. We were testing new parts on the car and now we go back to the workshops and continue the development before the next test in Morocco.”

Ouřednīček and Pons steered their DMAS South Racing Ford Rangers to eighth and 10th positions through the opening muddy 7.08km super special stage in the militarised area, near Szczecin, on Friday evening.

 The bulk of the action took place over two runs through a selective section of 176.33km in the area around Drawsko Pomorskie on Saturday. Pons and Ouřednīček safely negotiated the first pass in 11th and 13th places and held 10th and 13th overall at the midday service break in Szczecin.

 Pons climbed a place to ninth, after setting the eighth quickest time on the second run through the stage, and Ouřednīček reached the night halt in Szczecin in 16th position.

 Two runs through the Dobra and Lubieszyhn stage were planned for Sunday and the specials were modified slightly to run for 30.66km and 17.68km, respectively. Pons continued his steady and impressive climb through the field and the fifth quickest time enabled the Spaniard to move up to seventh position in the overall standings after Dobra. Ouřednīček held 14th.

 Pons now had the bit firmly between his teeth and the DMAS South Racing Ford Ranger clocked the third quickest time in the Lubieszyhn stage and enabled Pons to close in on sixth-placed Martin Prokop. Ouřednīček climbed a place to 13th.

 But the Spaniard hit trouble on the penultimate stage and the second pass through Dobra when he stopped half way through the special with a pair of broken drive shafts, whilst running as the third quickest driver on the stage at that point.

 The final stage was shortened and Ouřednīček benefited from the demise of Dutchman Erik van Loon to climb to 12th overall. Pons was unable to continue and DMAS South Racing mechanics replaced the broken components in the stage and the Spaniard returned to the service park rather than tackle the final stage.

 DMAS South Racing now turns its attentions to the Rally of Morocco, the penultimate round of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, at the start of October.

Overdrive Racing’s Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah continues to rewrite the history books after confirming a third FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies drivers’ title by winning this weekend’s Columna Medica Baja Poland, round seven of the nine-event series, at Szczecin in northwestern Poland. 

Driving a Toyota Hilux, Al-Attiyah edged into a useful lead early on and then came under fierce pressure from the experienced local driver Krzysztof Holowczyc when he slowed slightly over the closing stages to eventually record a fifth successive victory with his Overdrive Racing team by the margin of 1min 21sec.

 Partnered by French navigator Matthieu Baumel, Al-Attiyah adds the 2016 FIA World Cup title to the pair he earned in 2008 and 2015 and gives Overdrive Racing and Toyota a first ever FIA World Cup Drivers’ Championship title.

 The Polish duo of Marek Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor delivered a measured performance on their return to action in the Team Orlen Toyota Hilux and shadowed Al-Attiyah and Holowczyc to the finish in third position.

 Dane Jes Munk and Polish co-driver Rafal Marton reached the finish in seventh position in a third car and Al-Attiyah’s brother Khalifa teamed up with Belgian navigator Stéphane Prevot with backing from the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) to finish 10th.

 Overdrive Racing also supplied a car for the Polish duo of Marcin Maluszyński and Julita Maluszyńska. They reached the finish in Szcecin in ninth place.

 Frenchman Ronan Chabot and his navigator Gilles Pillot were placed just outside the top 10 until Chabot put his Toyota Hilux on its side in the fifth stage and were forced to retire.

  “This is a very nice feeling to have two cars on the podium and to take our first major FIA title here,” said a delighted Overdrive Racing’s CEO Jean-Marc Fortin. “This month is the 10th anniversary since we started Overdrive Racing with our first event being the Dakar in 2007. Some of the mechanics have been here since the start, since the creation of the company, and this is a superb result for all of us. 

 “We knew it would not be easy here. The Polish drivers know the stages well and they know where to cut and where to put the wheels. It is always like this. But Nasser was superb as usual and Marek claimed third place. That is a great result for him to be the best of the ‘unbeatable’ drivers. 

 “Then we have Jes and Khalifa in seventh and 10th and Michal in ninth, so five Overdrive cars inside the top 10. Disappointing obviously that we withdrew Ronan Chabot’s car after he put it on its side this morning, but this has been a superb weekend nonetheless and we can certainly enjoy this result and celebrate this evening.”

 Al-Attiyah laid down the gauntlet with the quickest time through the opening 7.08km super special stage in the militarised area, near Szececin, and edged into a lead of 12 seconds over local hero Holowczyc. Dabrowski, Chabot, Maluszyński, Khalifa Al-Attiyah and Muck were fourth, 14th, 17th, 19th and 23rd.

 Saturday’s action comprises two selective sections of 176.33km apiece in the militarised area around Drawsko Pomorskie. Al-Attiyah was not to be denied through the first pass here either and the Qatari beat Dabrowski by 28 seconds to extend his overall advantage to 48 seconds and give Overdrive Racing a 1-2 placing at the midday break.

 Munk and Chabot were ninth and 10th fastest and held similar positions in the overall standings. Maluszyński and Khalifa Al-Attiyah were classified in 15th and 16th overall.

 Al-Attiyah ceded the third stage win to Holowczyc by just 12 seconds, but the Qatari reached the overnight halt with an advantage over the Pole of 2min 18sec. Dabrowski maintained a podium position in third and Overdrive team-mates, Munk, Chabot, Khalifa Al-Attiyah and Maluszyński, were 10th, 12th, 14th and 15th overall.

 Sunday’s action consists of two repeat runs through a pair of shorter and modified stages of 30.66km and 17.68km at Dobra and Lubieszyhn.

Holowczyc reduced Al-Attiyah’s outright lead by six seconds through the opener, as Dabrowski and Munk held third and ninth overall and Chabot incurred a stage maximum penalty and slipped to 26th overall after putting his Toyota on its side. Maluszyński overhauled Khalifa Al-Attiyah to snatch 12th.

 Holowczyc maintained the pressure on Al-Attiyah through the fifth stage and the fourth quickest time for the Qatari did him no favours at all, although he admitted to taking it easy to avoid any risks. Al-Attiyah’s lead was reduced to just 1min 30sec heading into the repeat runs through the two stages. The other four Overdrive Toyotas held third, ninth, 11th and 12th overall.

 Dobra had deteriorated quite markedly for the second pass and Al-Attiyah posted a cautious time of 24min 32sec, but it was sufficient for the Qatari to extend his advantage over Holowczyc to 1min 34sec heading to the final Lubieszyhn stage. Dabrowski, Munk, Maluszyński and Khalifa Al-Attiyah held third, eighth, 10th and 11th overall.

 Al-Attiyah survived the final nervy few kilometres of the shortened stage to record the fourth quickest time of 6min 29sec to secure the victory in Poland and give himself and the team an unassailable lead in the FIA World Cup Drivers’ Championship standings with two rallies to go in Morocco and Portugal in October.

The Atacama Rally finishes with Kevin Benavides on the podium

The riders from Team HRC have finished an important rally in preparation for the Dakar Rally 2017 – the Atacama Rally – with Argentinean rider Kevin Benavides on the rostrum, runner-up in the final stage.

 Kevin Benavides was the best finisher among the components of Team HRC with a podium finish in the Rally Atacama 2016 after a high-speed week in the Chilean desert. The Argentinean rider, on the Honda CRF450 RALLY, made it onto the podium after finishing second in the fifth and final stage in the dunes of Copiapó.

 Teammate Paulo Gonçalves started out first after yesterday’s victory, but the final stage didn’t favour the Portuguese rider’s bid to retain yesterday’s third position in today’s final standings. In spite of opening the track throughout most of the day, the rider saw how various adversaries closed in on him over the course of the stage. Paulo goes home with an overall fourth place after Benavides whittled down the two-minute gap between the stablemates.

 American rider Ricky Brabec wraps up another race with the Team HRC squad and continues to gain experience and hone his navigational skills on the Honda CRF450 RALLY. Ricky comes away from his maiden Atacama Rally with seventh overall position.

 Team Honda South America Rally Team also featured in this, the fourth date of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship with Argentinean Franco Caimi, who relied on the support of Team HRC. Caimi finished the rally just behind Brabec on the final table.

Vitória para Paulo Gonçalves na 4.ª Etapa do Atacama Rally

Piloto português foi o mais rápido ao longo dos 320 quilómetros da penúltima etapa e recupera o terceiro lugar da classificação geral. 

Paulo Gonçalves venceu hoje a quarta etapa do Atacama Rally, quarta prova do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno 2016, subindo ao terceiro lugar da classificação geral. O piloto português fez uma etapa isenta de erros e tirou partido do equilíbrio entre velocidade e navegação para superar toda a concorrência na tirada com partida e chegada em Bahía Inglesa.

 O piloto de Esposende totalizou a “especial” cronometrada com 320 quilómetros num total de 2h29min33s, recupera ao terceiro lugar da tabela geral por troca com o seu colega de equipa Kevin Benavides e está a 6min24s do líder da prova, o australiano Toby Price.

 Amanhã, última etapa do Atacama Rally, Paulo Gonçalves será o primeiro a partir para os derradeiros 100 quilómetros cronometrados da prova.

 Paulo Gonçalves: “Foi uma boa etapa, um percurso com 320 quilómetros muito exigente, muito rápido, com muita pedra, muito perigoso, era importante evitar quedas. Hoje senti-me muito melhor da dor abdominal, consegui estar bem. O importante é que a mota está a funcionar muito bem, temos melhorado muito. Amanhã vamos tentar continuar num bom ritmo nos 100 quilómetros finais para terminar este rali da melhor forma.”

Victory for Paulo Gonçalves in the fourth stage of the Atacama Rally

Team HRC and Paulo Gonçalves took the top honours in the fourth stage of a fast and hazardous Atacama Rally. The team’s Argentinean rider Kevin Benavides fell while Ricky Brabec had a steady day in the saddle.

 The early morning mist once again wreaked havoc with the scheduling, not allowing the helicopters to take off and delaying the start of the race. Once more, the harshness of the Atacama Desert was all too evident in this penultimate stage with very rocky yet high-speed tracks that riders threw themselves into. The perils of the desert were all the more unexpected for the fast pace.

 Fortunately, the physical condition of Team HRC rider Paulo Gonçalves had improved considerably after a fall two days ago. He let rip on the track from Bahía Inglesa to Vallenar before returning on a looping circuit which was reduced on the day by twenty kilometres. Paulo set a storming pace and dominated the special stage, finishing the stage with a twenty second surplus over nearest second place rival. The Portuguese rider now lies in third spot overall some six minutes adrift of the leader.

 It wasn’t all good news for Team HRC. Early in the special in an area of fesh-fesh, the team’s Argentinean rider Kevin Benavides ran into a rock obscured by sand. The biker from Salta went over the handlebars of the bike which then impacted his body. Luckily, Kevin was able to get over the blow and get back in the fray, although he did concede some time to teammate Gonçalves. Benavides drops to fourth place in the overall standings some 8’34 behind leader Australian Toby Price.

 Ricky Brabec rode a steady stage today. The American continues with his apprenticeship to improve navigation skills, although today was more about velocity, with an average speed of 130 km/h. Ricky was seventh on the day and occupies the same overall position.

 The Argentinian Franco Caimi from Team Honda South America finished in a well-deserved eighth spot just behind Brabec. He likewise lies in eighth overall.

 The sixth edition of the Atacama Rally finishes tomorrow in Copiapó. Look forward to 100 kilometres of timed special in which the Team HRC crew will look to consolidate the podium places of riders Paulo Gonçalves and teammate Kevin Benavides.

Kevin Benavides makes progress in the Atacama Rally

Argentinean Kevin Benavides today rode a fine stage in the Copiapó dunes. The demanding stage saw the Team HRC prodigy excel in navigation as he took second spot on the day and second in the general standings.

 It may not have been the longest yet, but the third stage and halfway point of the Atacama Rally, was a real navigational workout in the dunes. The competitors got away from the bivouac at Bahía Inglesa at 10:00 with the 202.78 kilometre special beginning an hour and a half later in the arid dune-filled zone of Copiapó.

 Yesterday evening had seen the frontrunners affected by various sanctions. Local lad Pablo Quintanilla dropped from second place to fourth as a result of the six minute penalty for breaking the limit in a speed check zone. This moved the Team HRC riders Kevin Benavides and Paulo Gonçalves up a position in the second stage results, finishing second and third respectively.

 Kevin Benavides was off like a bat out of hell this morning which meant he was soon able to catch up with Australian Toby Price. The Argentinean Team HRC rider jostled with the Australian until the pair crossed the finish-line together. The rider from Salta finished in second place, a position that he now also occupies in the overall table.

 Paulo Gonçalves was less fortunate. The Portuguese rider was hampered all day by an injured abdomen, the result of a heavy fall in yesterday’s stage. Another fall and a minor navigational gaff meant the Team HRC regular dropped time to his adversaries.

 Team HRC’s American rider Ricky Brabec didn’t have the greatest day out either, losing time whilst hunting down an elusive waypoint. On a positive note the young American has been making considerable progress in his learning with the navigational skills.

 Tomorrow’s fourth stage will also feature a looping circuit, although this time the riders will begin by heading south bound for Vallenar before heading back to Bahía Inglesa. Will be 370 kms of Special stage.

Paulo Gonçalves mantém luta pelo pódio no Atacama Rally

Piloto português foi hoje o quarto mais rápido na terceira etapa, ocupando agora o quarto lugar da classificação geral da prova. 

A terceira de cinco etapas etapa do Atacama Rally disputou-se em redor de Bahía Inglesa com um total aproximado de 200 quilómetros cronometrados. Paulo Gonçalves, que esta quarta-feira, na segunda etapa da prova, viria a ascender ao segundo lugar da classificação geral após uma penalização do chileno Pablo Quintanilla, foi hoje dos primeiros a partir para a exigente tirada de navegação onde foi o quarto piloto mais rápido do dia.

 O piloto de Esposende cumpriu a terceira etapa com mais 8min01s do que o vencedor Pablo Quintanilla, e na classificação geral baixou ao quarto posto a 7min44s do líder Toby Price, e pouco mais de um minuto de reentrar no pódio final desta quarta prova do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno.

 A quarta e penúltima etapa do Atacama Rally tem novamente partida e chegada em Bahía Inglesa, num total de 370 quilómetros a contrarrelógio.

 Paulo Gonçalves: “Hoje foi uma etapa particularmente difícil. Tive muitas dores na zona abdominal e os saltos dificultaram-me muito. Ao quilómetro 100 tive algumas dificuldades em alcançar um ‘waypoint’ no topo de uma duna, não consegui subir rápido o suficiente, ao voltar para baixo sofri uma queda e perdi algum tempo. Também me perdi numa zona bastante difícil em termos de navegação. Não foi um bom dia para mim mas o importante é continuar na luta e pressionar nos próximos quilómetros para chegar a um bom resultado.”

- Final da temporada vai ser cumprido com nova máquina.

- Dupla de pilotos vai tentar rodar sem olhar a resultados no CNTT.

- Nissan Proto reaparecerá no início do ano completamente transformado.

 Os pilotos do am Racing Team – Alexandre Mota e Aníbal Mendonça, vão acabar a época de Todo-o-Terreno Nacional com um Nissan Patrol, inscrito na categoria T1 e não no seu habitual Nissan Proto, que está nesta altura a ser completamente modificado, para garantir uma presença mais consistente e competitiva no CNTT de 2017.

 A presença na Baja de Aragón, apesar de ser considerada pela equipa, como uma boa experiência, não trouxe os resultados esperados, pois o Nissan Proto não resistiu à dureza da corrida espanhola e deixou a dupla Alexandre Mota / Aníbal Mendonça, longe da meta e dos objetivos traçados para a mesma.

 Pensando no que resta da época, o piloto resolveu mudar toda a estratégia, preferindo não “perder mão” no final da temporada, garantindo a presença nas duas provas que faltam no calendário – Baja TT Idanha e Baja Portalegre – e ainda as 24 horas TT, com um Nissan Patrol GR, ao passo que o Nissan Proto vai entretanto ser alvo de algumas modificações, para se apresentar na máxima força, já na primeira prova de 2017:

“Não temos dúvidas de que o Nissan Proto não cumpriu o que dele esperávamos em termos de fiabilidade. Por isso resolvemos – depois de termos trocado impressões após Aragón – que o Nissan Proto iria ficar parado, para ser preparado convenientemente para 2017. Vai receber um novo motor, modificações profundas no chassis e na carroçaria. Estará pronto no início do ano, altura em que realizaremos testes intensivos, antes da primeira prova da época. 

 Entretanto não vamos faltar às duas últimas provas do ano. Em Idanha e Portalegre, vamos alinhar com um Nissan Patrol GR, o carro que tínhamos destinado para ir apenas às 24 am Racing Team muda planos e já prepara o próximo Campeonato de Todo o Terreno horas TT de Fronteira, mas que servirá para nos mantermos na competição e que esperamos, nos ajude a conseguir os melhores resultados possíveis.”

 Será portanto com esta máquina que o AM Racing Team vai estar presente na Baja TT Idanha, que a Escuderia Castelo Branco organiza na zona raiana, nos próximos dia 9 e 10 de Setembro e que marca a “rentrée” do TT nacional de 2016.

Paulo Gonçalves segue em terceiro no Chile

Piloto português sofreu uma aparatosa queda na fase inicial da tirada mas manteve-se na luta pelos lugares cimeiros até ao final. 

Paulo Gonçalves cumpriu hoje a segunda etapa do Atacama Rally, no Chile, averbando o quarto melhor tempo por entre a lista de concorrentes ao Campeonato do Mundo da especialidade e mantém o terceiro lugar da classificação geral, a escassos 5 minutos do líder da prova.

 A segunda de cinco etapas do Atacama Rally foi a mais longa desta edição da prova chilena, com um total ascendente a 460 quilómetros entre Antofagasta e Bahía Inglesa. Paulo Gonçalves sofreu uma queda na fase inicial da corrida que o deixou com algumas dores na zona abdominal, mas mesmo assim conseguiu rodar na dianteira do pelotão, tendo sido o quarto mais rápido do dia a 3min35s do vencedor do dia, o australiano Toby Price. À geral, Gonçalves mantém o 3.º lugar a 5min22s do líder chileno Pablo Quintanilla.

 A terceira etapa do Atacama Rally disputa-se em “loop” em redor de Bahía Inglesa, na região de Copiapó, com um total de 200 quilómetros cronometrados onde a navegação será decisiva para a classificação final.

 Paulo Gonçalves: “Terminámos a mais longa ‘especial’ deste rali, uma etapa muito completa, difícil, com muita navegação, caminhos rápidos e com muita pedra. Estou muito satisfeito com o comportamento da minha mota, o trabalho que temos vindo a fazer está a mostrar-se na prática. Ao quilómetro 14 sofri uma queda que me deixou com algumas dores na zona abdominal, ainda assim consegui chegar ao final sem contratempos.”

Tough day for Team HRC who remain amongst the leaders at the Atacama Rally

Team HRC’s trio of riders Paulo Gonçalves, Kevin Benavides and Ricky Brabec continue to rub shoulders the leaders in the Atacama Rally in spite of suffering the severity of the rally’s longest stage.

 It was a long and tough stage today at the Atacama Rally around the spectacular ‘Hand of the Desert’ in Antofagasta. The second 460 kilometre stage was fought out over some very rapid and rock-filled off-piste areas as riders also got their first taste of the dunes of Bahía Inglesa towards the end of the run.

 Team HRC headed out poised to attack, hoping to pull back some time and improve on overall times. However both Paulo Gonçalves and Kevin Benavides crashed in separate incidents. Portuguese Gonçalves had got off to a swift start but fell injuring his abdomen forcing a stage strategy rethink. The rider went into damage limitation mode, cutting the risks and managing to make it home without significant loss of time. Gonçalves holds third place overall.

 Likewise, Kevin Benavides was also to crash in a high-speed zone on one of the shorter tracks. The impact damaged the front end of the Honda CRF450 RALLY although the Argentine fortunately escaped without injury. Pressing on, he was able to post a third spot on the day, just several minutes behind the stage winner. The rider from Salta now lies in fourth in the general rankings.

 Ricky Brabec continues with his apprenticeship in the Chilean desert on his first participation in the Atacama Rally. After a rapid start the American slowed down the pace in the second part of the special, but remains in the top five in the general standings.

 Tomorrow, Thursday, will see the third stage disputed around the Bahía Inglesa loop which will take in over 200 kilometres of the Copiapó region where navigation could prove to be decisive.

Paulo Gonçalves foi terceiro no arranque do Atacama Rally

Piloto português fez quase toda a 1.ª Etapa sem GPS na sua Honda mas conseguiu manter-se sempre na dianteira da prova chilena. 

Paulo Gonçalves disputou esta terça-feira a primeira etapa do Atacama Rally, quarta prova do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno que decorre até ao próximo sábado no Chile, averbando o terceiro melhor tempo do dia numa “especial” que ascendeu aos 230 quilómetros. 

Depois de ter sido igualmente o terceiro classificado no prólogo de 10 quilómetros realizado na tarde desta segunda-feira, Paulo Gonçalves escolheu sair no quinto posto para a primeira tirada do Atacama Rally, mas cerca do quilómetro 30 viria a sentir algumas dificuldades com a avaria do seu sistema de GPS que viria a comprometer o melhor ritmo do piloto português.

 Gonçalves fechou o dia com a terceira melhor marca a 2min50s do vencedor, o chileno Pablo Quintanilla, que perfez a etapa num total de 2h14min56s.

 A segunda etapa do Atacama Rally, a mais longa da prova chilena, decorre entre Antofagasta e Bahía Inglesa, com um total de 400 quilómetros.

 Paulo Gonçalves: “Uma primeira etapa muito boa, um dia longo com 230 quilómetros de "especial". Inicialmente tive alguns problemas com o muito pó dos pilotos que saíram na frente, além disso também perdi o GPS ao quilómetro 30 e tive alguma dificuldade em alcançar alguns "waypoints". Amanhã vai ser mais um longo dia de prova, vamos continuar focados em fazer bons quilómetros e testar sem problemas.”

SPANIARD PONS TEAMS UP WITH RONNIE GRAUE TO DRIVE DMAS SOUTH RACING FORD RANGER IN BAJA POLAND

· Czech duo of Ourednicek and Vaculik crew second DMAS South Racing car 

Spanish former WRC star Xavier Pons is preparing to tackle his third event of the cross-country rallying season, when he and new Argentinean navigator Ronnie Graue tackle this weekend’s Columna Medica Baja Poland, round seven of the FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies, in a DMAS South Racing-backed Ford Ranger.

 After finishing the gruelling Dakar Rally with DMAS South Racing, Pons teamed up with the team again at July’s Baja Spain Aragón and was partnered by Uruguayan co-driver Sergio Lafuente on his way to a fine fourth overall behind Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz and Mikko Hirvonen.

 The Polish outing will be the first time that Pons and Graue have competed together. His navigator hails from Mendoza in northwestern Argentina and has considerable experience of rallying in major cross-country events, having finished fifth and 12th on the Dakar Rally in 2012 and 2013. Graue was also the navigator for Lucio Alvarez when South Racing teamed up with Neil Woolridge Motorsport to run a Ford Ranger for the first time at the Dakar in 2014.

 The Czech pairing of Tomas Ourednicek and Pavel Vaculik crew the second DMAS South Racing Ford Ranger in Poland. The pair enjoyed a successful first event with their new team in Spain and reached the finish of that event in Teruel in 11th position.

  “It will be the first time that the team races Baja Poland and we are looking forward to the strong competition,” said South Racing’s managing director Scott Abraham.” We are using the Baja as a test and development event to put kilometres on the new parts and, most importantly, to give Xevi and Ronni seat time in the DMAS South Racing Ranger.

  “It is great to have Tomas and Pavel back with us for their second outing in the Buggyra Racing Ford Ranger. They’re familiar with the event and the region and have competed here on numerous occasions, both in the FIA World Cup and the CEZ Championship. The experience there will be a great benefit,”

 Columna Medica Rally Poland is being organised by Foundation Baja Poland and is centred around the Szczecin, Dobra and Zachodniopomorskie areas of northern Poland. The host city of Szczecin is the seventh largest in the country, is a major port near the Baltic Sea and the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

 Scrutineering checks and administration will tae place at Northeast Marina in Szczecin on Thursday (August 25), before crews will be permitted to carry out a shakedown test at the military shooting range on Friday morning. After the ceremonial start in Szczecin at 17.00hrs on Friday evening, teams will then tackle the opening 6.9km super special stage in the militarised area from 18.00hrs. 

Saturday’s action comprises two selective sections of 175km apiece in the area around Drawsko Pomorskie from 08.20hrs and 13.40hrs.

 Sunday’s action consists of two repeat runs through a pair of shorter special stages of 39.50km and 18.20km in length. These Dobra and Lubieszyhn specials will then be repeated at 12.30hrs and 13.20hrs, before the ceremonial finish in the Szczecin Rally Park from 14.30pm. In a total route of 787.68km, teams will tackle a total of 472.30 competitive kilometres.

Solid start to the Atacama Rally for Team HRC riders

Chile’s Atacama Rally kicked off today – the fourth round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship – with Team HRC performing well in stage one after dominating yesterday’s prologue.
Team HRC faired well over the 230 kilometre first stage of the Atacama Rally and finished the day well-poised to tackle tomorrow’s stage – the longest of the event. Nevertheless, were it not for a minor navigation error by Argentinean Team HRC rider Kevin Benavides, the result could have been even better. Benavides had won the curtain-raiser on the Honda CRF450 RALLY the previous day and chose to start from an attacking position in fourth place.

 Indeed, attack he did from the outset this morning, which had been delayed due to early morning mist that wouldn’t allow the race helicopter to take off. By kilometre thirty the Argentine had overtaken the three riders who had started ahead and now found himself opening the track. However, an incorrect choice of path lost him several minutes and the leadership to local rider Pablo Quintanilla.

 Portuguese Paulo Gonçalves, third in the prologue yesterday, chose a fifth place start and attacked in his inimitable style. In spite of maintaining a scorching pace, a GPS issue left the rider without a signal for over 100 kilometres, forcing him to slow the rhythm down. Quintanilla was able to catch up and the two crossed the line virtually together.

 American rider Ricky Brabec was feeling at home with the off-piste type of rallying that featured throughout the first stage of the Atacama. After a steady ride, the Team HRC man finished in fifth spot, some five and a half minutes adrift of the race leader.

 Argentinean Franco Caimi, from Honda South America Rally Team, also got off to a notable start to the rally taking seventh place on the Honda CRF450 RALLY.

Baja Poland: Holowczyc to go again for it on native soil

• A total of four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles to contest the event 

• Penultimate Baja in the FIA World Cup calendar 2016 

Four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles will contest the Baja Poland (26th to 28th August, 2016), the seventh round of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup. For Krzysztof Holowczyc who was teamed-up with his young compatriot Lukasz Kurzeja, contesting the off-road event in his home country is a must. And Poland’s young Jakub ‘Kuba’ Przygonski also wants to contest the Baja Poland with Tom Colsoul in the navigator seat. Chiles Boris Garafulic and Portuguese Filipe Palmeiro form the third pairing and the fourth MINI ALL4 Racing will be raced by the two Dutchmen Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar.

 Actually, Holowczyc had retired from off-road racing in 2015 but the five-time Baja Poland winner just couldn’t resist the chance of contesting his home event again and with a MINI ALL4 Racing, he wants to repeat the victory he celebrated in 2015. For Przygonski who competed in the Dakar and the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, the Baja Poland will be the third appearance in the 2016 off-road racing season. For Garafulic, however, who extra travels from Chile to Poland to contest the event it will be the first off-road appearance since the Dakar. Meanwhile, van Loon and Rosegaar who had to cope with a massive dose of bad luck in the Hungarian Baja want to demonstrate that they have got what it takes to become a factor in the battle for the win.

 Following the events in Italy, Spain and Hungary, the Baja Poland is the fourth consecutive Baja on the calendar. This year, the event will feature an extended mileage. The competitors will have to cover a total of 788 kilometres, with the special-stage distance amounting to 472 kilometres. Furthermore, the schedule features seven special stages instead of the five in previous Baja Poland editions. After the traditional prologue, contested on Friday not far from Szczecin, the pairings will have to contest two special stages on a military training area not far from Drawsko Pomorskie. And on Sunday, the event schedule comprises another four special stages around the city of Dobra.

OVERDRIVE RACING ENTERS FIVE CARS IN BAJA POLAND AS NASSER AL-ATTIYAH BIDS TO CONFIRM FIA WORLD CUP TITLE

Overdrive Racing’s season of FIA World Cup for Cross-Country rallying continues when it enters five Toyota Hiluxes in this weekend’s Columna Medica Baja Poland, round seven of the nine-event series, in Szczecin in northwestern Poland

 FIA World Cup leader Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah returns from a disappointing skeet shooting programme at the Rio Olympics to try and secure a fifth successive rally victory since joining Overdrive Racing before the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge in April.

 The Qatari again teams up with French navigator Matthieu Baumel and arrives in Szczecin with a massive 88-point lead in the title race. Victory in Poland would give the Qatari a total of 210 points and make it mathematically impossible for him to be caught with two events remaining in Morocco and Portugal.

 The Polish duo of Marek Dabrowski and Jacek Czachor return to cross-country action in the second Team Orlen car and aim to improve on the driver’s sixth position in the championship standings. The duo finished fifth on their home event last year in a Toyota Hilux.

 Frenchman Ronan Chabot and his navigator Gilles Pillot crew the third car and the Dane Jes Munk and Polish co-driver Rafal Marton return to action with Overdrive Racing for the first time since visa issues forced them to withdraw prematurely from the recent Silk Way Rally in Asia to occupy the fourth Toyota. Chabot and Pillot enjoyed a successful Dakar outing with the team in January.

 Al-Attiyah’s brother Khalifa drives the fifth car with backing from the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF). Although a relative newcomer to the discipline of off-road rallying, Khalifa has considerable experience of FIA Middle East special stage rallying and teams up with Belgian co-driver Stéphane Prevot. The duo finished July’s Baja Spain Aragon together in 13th position, but retired from the recent Hungarian Baja.

 Overdrive Racing has also supplied a sixth car for the Polish duo of Marcin Maluszynski and Julita Maluszynska.

  “This is another important event for Overdrive Racing and a superb opportunity for Nasser and Matthieu to secure the title for the team and for our other drivers to continue their experience with the Toyota Hilux,” said Overdrive Racing’s CEO Jean-Marc Fortin.

 Columna Medica Rally Poland is being organised by Foundation Baja Poland and takes place in the Szczecin, Dobra, and Zachodniopomorskie areas and across the military zone in Drawsko Pomorskie. The host city of Szczecin is the seventh largest in the country and the capital of the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Paulo Gonçalves disputa Campeonato do Mundo no Chile

Piloto português inicia esta segunda-feira o Atacama Rally, a quarta prova do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno. 

Paulo Gonçalves participa com a equipa oficial Honda no Atacama Rally, quarta prova do calendário de 2016 do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis TT que tem lugar no Chile até ao próximo sábado, 27 de agosto, com o exigente deserto do Atacama a servir como pano de fundo da competição.

 Composto por um prólogo, a realizar já esta segunda-feira, e mais cinco etapas extensíveis até ao dia de sábado, o Atacama Rally será mais um importante teste de preparação de Paulo Gonçalves e da equipa HRC para a próxima edição do Rali Dakar, prova que parte a 2 de janeiro de 2017 da cidade de Assunção, no Paraguai, e ruma a Buenos Aires, na Argentina, palco de meta para os resistentes depois de mais uma passagem “festiva” pela Bolívia.

 Ausente da totalidade do Campeonato do Mundo de Ralis Todo-o-Terreno em 2016, competição que venceu em 2013, foi segundo em 2014 e terceiro em 2015, Paulo Gonçalves e a equipa Honda optaram este ano por realizar apenas as provas de maior interesse na preparação para o Dakar, a maior competição do mundo da especialidade e que teve já o piloto de Esposende e a Honda muito próximos de alcançar a vitória final na passada edição de 2015.

From north to south: the Atacama Rally, next mission for Team HRC

Team HRC is fully-booked over the next few days. While Joan Barreda and Michael Metge have been taking part and dominate the ‘Vegas to Reno’ race in the United States, the rest of the team – Paulo Gonçalves, Ricky Brabec and Kevin Benavides – are competing in Chile at the Atacama Rally, the penultimate date of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship.

 The preparations for the 2017 Dakar Rally continue for Team HRC after the successes achieved in the recent Merzouga Rally, the Desafío Ruta 40 and Baja Aragón, which saw the official Honda factory riders grab top honours in all of these events.

 For the Atacama Rally, Team HRC line up Portuguese stalwart Paulo Gonçalves, alongside young guns American Ricky Brabec and Argentinean Kevin Benavides, who get to savour the demands of the Chilean desert once more. This should provide Gonçalves with a useful opportunity to clock up more mileage after a sound performance in the Desafío Ruta 40. Ricky Brabec will get his first chance to ride the Chilean rally, which will offer the young American ample possibilities to improve navigation skills.

Argentinean rider Kevin Benavides goes in search of more silverware after wins in the Merzouga Rally, Ruta 40 and the third round of the Argentinean Cross Country championship: the La Cumbre Rally. Argentinian rider Franco Caimi is racing in the Atacama Rally with Honda South America Team on a CRF 450 RALLY bike after demonstrating his rally capabilities in the last Desafío Ruta 40.

 Over the coming week, the three riders from Team HRC and the Honda CRF450 RALLY will battle it out in the northern area of the South American country, in the driest desert in the world. The Atacama Rally, with a total of 1800 kilometres, features a high percentage of timed special stages and some high-profile participants.

 Once the administrative and technical checks are passed, Team HRC get down to business with a prologue on the outskirts of Antofagasta, the fifth biggest city in the country. The first stage gets underway on Tuesday with a loop starting and finishing in Antofagasta. The Atacama Rally will wrap up in the heart of the Atacama Desert in Copiapó on 27th August.

Joan Barreda, untouchable in the Vegas to Reno race

Team HRC’s Joan Barreda has scooped a fine win in the twentieth edition of America’s legendary ‘Vegas to Reno’. The Spaniard, astride the Honda CRF450 RALLY, dominated the 1000 kilometres of Nevada dust and desert which connect the two cities.

 Joan Barreda proved to be the fastest over the 644 mile ‘Vegas to Reno’ – the longest off-road race in the USA. The race, now in its twentieth year, featured no less than 342 participants. This is the second straight win for Joan Barreda after July’s Baja Aragón triumph and the fourth consecutive victory for Team HRC. The growing list includes: the Merzouga Rally in Morocco, the Desafío Ruta 40 in Argentina, Spain’s Baja Aragón and now the Vegas to Reno race in the U.S.

 Joan Barreda and Michael Metge made it clear that the Honda CRF450 RALLY is a lethal weapon in the desert. The Spanish rider, starting out from third position, finished the first day’s 475 kilometre stint in second spot. Barreda continued to up the ante with an excellent performance on his maiden Nevada Desert adventure. The Team HRC rider then scorched through the 560 kilometres of dust on day two, holding the lead throughout the day and crossing the line with a 7’30” advantage over the nearest second-place rival.

 Frenchman Metge favoured less well after a heavy blow to the rear wheel in the first stage made handling difficult. In addition, the rider was sanctioned with a hefty 30 minute penalty for changing the wheel. In spite of having to start from back in twentieth position on Sunday, Metge fought back through the accumulation of dust on the track to take fifth spot on the day and sixth overall.

 Team HRC have spent several weeks testing in the Californian desert under the auspices of Johnny Campbell and the JCR Team, who also offered assistance throughout the Vegas to Reno race. The American expressed his satisfaction at the way the team have worked: “We’ve worked really hard with the riders over the last few weeks, both myself and the guys from the JCR Team. We had a great time working with Joan and Mika and I hope to work with Team HRC to achieve the victory at the Dakar. I wish to thank Joan, Mika, all at Team HRC and the staff of JCR for a great job done in the Vegas to Reno 2016, achieving a great triumph for Team HRC. Many thanks also to Taichi Honda and Team HRC for placing their trust in Team JCR to help build a better programme to win the 2017 Rally Dakar”.

Com o ASX Racing e L200 Triton SR, Ralliart Brasil encara os 3.000 km do Rally dos Sertões

Guilherme Spinelli / Youssef Haddad e Sylvio de Barros / Rafael Capoani se preparam para a maior competição do off-road nacional, que larga no dia 3 de setembro de Goiânia (GO)

 A Ralliart Brasil, divisão de alta performance da Mitsubishi Motors, estará novamente presente no Rally dos Sertões, o maior rali do Brasil, com dois carros: o ASX Racing, campeão geral em 2015, e a L200 Triton SR, tricampeão da categoria Protótipos T1.

 Guilherme Spinelli, o maior campeão do Sertões com cinco títulos, volta a correr ao lado de Youssef Haddad, com quem tem três títulos na prova. Eles estarão a bordo do ASX Racing, veículo projetado para encarar os maiores desafios do planeta.

 O navegador Marcelo Vivolo, que participou de duas etapas do Campeonato Brasileiro de Rally Cross-country ao lado de Guiga neste ano, permanece na equipe mas, nessa competição, dá lugar a Youssef, que é o engenheiro da Ralliart Brasil e poderá observar in loco as evoluções aplicadas no ASX Racing.

"Não há feedback melhor do que participar de uma prova como o Sertões e observar o desenvolvimento do carro. Em provas longas como essa, o trabalho da dupla vai muito além da navegação e pilotagem", explica Youssef.

  "Estamos trabalhando no desenvolvimento do ASX Racing desde o Rally Dakar. Ter o Youssef como navegador vai ajudar muito nesse processo, já que ele também é o engenheiro responsável pelo carro. Vamos somar forças para encarar o maior desafio em terras brasileiras", ressalta o piloto, que vai para o seu 16º Sertões.

 A largada da prova será no dia 3 de setembro, em Goiânia (GO), e a chegada, no dia 10/9, em Palmas (TO). A competição passará também pelo Estado da Bahia. Ao todo, serão 3.143 quilômetros de percurso, sendo 2.341 km de trechos cronometrados.

 A Equipe Ralliart Brasil, também terá a dupla Sylvio de Barros / Rafael Capoani, que irá encarar o Sertões 2016 com a L200 Triton SR, veículo três vezes campeão da competição na categoria Protótipos T1 e melhor carro nacional na disputa.

Barreda and Metge to take part in the ‘Vegas to Reno’

This weekend Team HRC riders Joan Barreda and Michael Metge are set to participate in the legendary ‘Vegas to Reno’ race, the longest off-road race in the United States, now in its twentieth edition.

 As a climax to several weeks of testing in the deserts of the United States, Team HRC’s Joan Barreda (Spain) and Michael Metge (France) will line up for the arduous ‘Vegas to Reno’ rally. Over two days -start on Friday 19th and end on Saturday 20th- riders will have to cover 644 miles (1036 kilometres) of the Nevada Desert in a race which connects the state’s two main cities: Las Vegas and Reno. It is the longest off-road race in the U.S. and is the seventh race in the ‘Best in the Desert’ calendar. Barreda and Metge will race in the ‘Vegas to Reno’ thanks to the logistical and technical assistance provided by team JCR’s Johnny Campbell and American Honda.

 The objective for the Team HRC riders is to continue the intense programme of testing that the Honda CRF450 RALLY has been forced to endure while the team sets up the bike ahead of the 2017 Rally Dakar.

 American Team HRC rider Ricky Brabec, who won the 2014 edition of the ‘Vegas to Reno’ won’t be taking part as he is currently in Chile for the Atacama Rally 2016 which will be held from 21st to 27th August. Brabec will ride the Chilean desert alongside fellow Honda CRF450 RALLY riders Paulo Gonçalves and Kevin Benavides.

Hungarian Baja: Hirvonen wins his first Cross-Country-Rally

- One-two for the MINI ALL4 Racing 

- Menzies secures the fine second place 

In the Hungarian Baja, round six of the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup, two MINI ALL4 Racing pairings, Mikko Hirvonen / Michel Périn and Bryce Menzies / Pete Mortensen, outclassed the entire field. While Mikko Hirvonen celebrated his first win as MINI ALL4 Racing driver, the US-American added to the great MINI ALL4 racing result by finishing second, thus also securing his best result in raid rallying. At the same time, the two Dutchmen, Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar, had to cope with a major dose of bad luck and were forced into early retirement.

 Apart from the prologue on Friday evening, the MINI ALL4 Racing won every single special stage. In the special stages two to four, Hirvonen / Périn always set the fastest time, with Menzies / Mortensen finishing second twice and fifth in the final stage. In the end, Hirvonen won the event with a six-second lead over Menzies. “I’m so happy about my first win the MINI and X-raid,” beamed Hirvonen. “We had a great weekend and everything ran perfectly. I hadn’t expected the Hungarian Baja to be so challenging and difficult. When I learned about the distances of the special stage I thought this would be a kind of a sprint event but they were very technical and on the slippery terrain tackling them often was anything but easy.”

 Menzies also was delighted with having finished runner-up, in his second Baja. “In the run-up I wasn’t aware what I would have to cope with and in the end, it proved to be a major challenge. There were high-speed sections across trees and open space with hard terrain,” said the US-American. “Between the trees I opted for a more careful approach as I don’t know the MINI that well and the track surface was extremely slippery. But I’m happy about the result and having finished that close behind a great driver, such as Mikko, is positive or me.” 

Van Loon and Rosegaar also delivered in fine style and wanted to push in the third special stage to keep their chances of securing a top result alive. But then, they got stuck in a ditch and a few metres later, the left rear wheel broke and they had to retire. “We proved that we have got what it takes to battle for the win,” the Dutchman said annoyed. “A pity that we couldn’t keep on demonstrating our competitiveness.”

 In only two weeks, the FIA Cross Country Rally World Cup will be continued with the seventh round, the Baja Poland.

Three MINI ALL4 Racing about to start in Hungary

• Hirvonen, Menzies and van Loon want to attack in Hungary 

• Baja Poland: Holowczyc on his home soil in a MINI ALL4 Racing 

In the FIA World Cup for Cross Country Rallies short Bajas are on the schedule during this time of the year. After the Bajas in Italy and Spain the FIA World Cup moves on to the Hungarian Baja (12th -14th Aug 2016) and three MINI ALL4 Racing crews are going to participate in this three-day-event: Mikko Hirvonen (FIN) / Michel Périn (FRA) already were successful in Spain and now they want to continue to prepare for the WRC-like stages of the next Dakar. Bryce Menzies (USA) wants to gain more experience in the MINI ALL4 Racing. In Hungary, he will race with his compatriot Pete Mortensen with whom Menzies participates in US-races. The two Dutchmen Erik van Loon and Wouter Rosegaar are the first time back in their MINI ALL4 Racing after the Dakar in January.

 The Hungarian Baja will start on Friday evening with a prologue. After this ten kilometer stage the starting ceremony will take place in the middle of the historical city of Veszprém. On the following day all competitors will have to compete in a 170,24km long special stage which will be done twice. On Sunday, one stage of 170,72km is scheduled. The tight and twisty stages will lead the competitors through the woods of the military training area around the city of Veszprém.

 Already two weeks after the Hungarian Baja the team will move on to the Baja Poland, round seven of the FIA World Cup and Krzysztof Holowczyc in a MINI ALL4 Racing is going to be one of the competitors. Though the Polish sportsman has announced his retirement from cross country rallying last year, his heart still beats for the Baja in his home country. “The Baja Poland is a very important event for me. After I have announced my retirement last year in Szczecin, I already knew that I would do whatever it takes to participate here again. I will try my very best to take the victory for the sixth time.”
