Silk Way Rally: Successful half-time balance for the MINI ALL4 Racing

• Four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles in the top 10

• Second week will feature sand and dunes

About 4,800 of the total of 10,774 kilometres have been covered what means that still more than 50 percent of the total distance of the Silk Way Rally is waiting for the competitors in the second week. So far, the five MINI ALL4 Racing pairings have delivered in very good style: with six days contested, the two Russians Vladimir Vasilyev and Konstantin Zhiltsov racing for Team VRT hold third position, followed by the pairings Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) / Timo Gottschalk (GER) and Aidyn Rakhimbayev (KZA) / Anton Nikolaev (RUS). The second Kazakh in a MINI ALL4 Racing, Bauyrzhan Issabayev and his Russian navigator Vladimir Demyanenko also made it to the top 10 and currently hold ninth place – while Harry Hunt (GBR) and Andreas Schulz (GER) will start from 12th position into the second week. Following tomorrow’s special stage, the rally will cross the border to China.

This year’s Silk Way Rally does not only feature sections that are challenging for both the drivers and the navigators but also a time schedule that is extremely exhausting for the competitors and the service. Limited sleep and long stages wear them out, physically and mentally. And the three-hour switch to another time zone after the border crossing to Kazakhstan, resulting in a clearly shorter night, gave many of those involved a really hard time. This applies particularly to the co-drivers who have to prepare the road book for the coming day after their arrival in the bivouac. “We haven’t got a lot of time for sleeping and the road book,” says Vasilyev’s co-driver Zhiltsov. “But we must prepare the road book properly and so, the rest has to step back. Three days ago I slept just two hours but yesterday some more hours. But we all were really tired and looked ahead to the rest day.”

Just as it was the case in the Dakar Rally, in January, rain represented a major problem for the organisers. The first stage after the prologue, for instance, had to be cancelled. The track partly was flooded and extremely slippery. And yesterday, the second part of the special stage had to be cancelled at short notice. Due to a thunderstorm at Almaty, the helicopters couldn’t take off and for safety reasons, racing cars mustn’t start without helicopters in the air. Furthermore, the mud the pairing’s had to cope with in several special stages made many drivers swear. In the fifth special stage, many crews hat to get out of their vehicles to clean their windscreens as the wipers were overstrained. And in the fourth special stage, Hunt lost nearly half an hour in a mud hole before he was towed out by an opponent.

Vasilyev had a good first week apart from the longest stage on day five where he lost a lot of time. Due to a damaged tyre in the opening stages his opponents could close in on him to then even pass him. So, the Russian had to eat a lot of dust behind the other cars and had to back off again and again, thus losing a lot of time. Al-Rajhi also lost a lot of time in this special stage. A total of three punctures forced him to stop several times. “These punctures certainly cost us 10 minutes,” the Saudi estimated. “Without these 10 minutes and the overheated engine on the previous day we would be among the front-runners.”

Meanwhile, the two Kazakhs Rakhimbayev and Issabayev surprised with many good and consistent performances that took them both to the top 10. Rakhimbayev gained a lot of time when securing the very fine third place in the fifth and longest special stage. “We get going better and better day by day,” said the Kazakh, “The last few days were exhausting but we got through well. I hope the days in China will be long and demanding as this suits us well.”

Nonetheless, all the competitors have a lot of respect for the second week that will take them across China. There, the Gobi Desert is waiting for them with dunes and sand. “Most of us don’t know the dunes in China and I heard that they are really high and not easy to drive on,” reveals Zhiltsov. “Anything can happen and change, there.” Young Briton Hunt is of the same opinion: “The second part of the rally definitely will be the more interesting one. In China you can both gain and lose a lot of time.” Following all the bad luck encountered in the past days, Al-Rajhi hopes to there be able to push and work his way up to the front end of the field. “I hope that we have had our dose of bad luck and will be able to contest the second week without having to cope with more problems. The second part will be tough with several surprises – hopefully more of them for the other vehicles than for us.”

Tomorrow’s route will take the field from Almaty, Kazakhstan, to Bortala, China. Before crossing the border, the pairings will have to contest a 76.86-kilometre special stage in the mountains. Held in a height between 2,000 and 2,600 metres above sea level. A technically demanding stage, offering virtually no overtaking possibilities.

 Overall standings after stage 6:

1st C. Despres (FRA) / Castera (GRA) – Peugeot - 11h 06m 35s 2nd
S. Loeb (FRA) / D. Elena (MCO) – Peugeot – 11h 14m 35s

SILK WAY RALLY – LEG 6 : PEUGEOT ON TOP AT REST DAY

The sixth leg of the Silk Way Rally – the last before Friday’s rest day – saw the PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs of Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA and Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA complete the day in first and second places overall. Meanwhile, the superb overnight work of Peugeot Sport’s mechanics and technical staff ensured that the PEUGEOT 2008 DKR of Stéphane PETERHANSEL / Jean Paul COTTRET was able to stay in the event. Team Peugeot Total intends to keep up the same sort of pace when action resumes on Saturday.

 - Gale force winds at the start of the second part of today’s leg and a weather warning for the finish in Almaty forced the organisers to cancel part of the initially-scheduled 411-kilometre drive and, after contesting a 111km stage, competitors were diverted onto the same route as that taken by the service vehicles. - After winning Wednesday’s stage, the #104 PEUGEOT 2008 DKR was the first car to leave the overnight halt. Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA came 15th today after suffering a number of problems but they still top the provisional leaderboard.

 - Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA took advantage of errors by their direct rivals to gain ground. They completed today’s stage in third position to strengthen their footing on the podium (2nd overall), just eight minutes short of their team-mates.

 - Despite their woes on Leg 5 (Wednesday), Stéphane PETERHANSEL/ Jean-Paul COTTRET succeeded in nursing the #100 PEUGEOT 2008 DKR back to the bivouac in the middle of the night after dropping more than six hours to the leaders, plus time penalties. Team Peugeot Total’s technical squad worked through the night to get the car back into shape in less than seven hours, their efforts focusing notably on the front-left and rear-right suspension, as well as on the engine’s cooling system. The team’s inspection didn’t reveal any irremediable damage, which meant the French pair was able to line up for the start of Leg 6 this morning, watched proudly by Peugeot Sport Director Bruno FAMIN. They went on to post the second-best time on the stage.

Bruno FAMIN (Team Manager, Team Peugeot Total / Director, Peugeot Sport) “We’ve reached the rest day with two PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs running first and second overall. That’s obviously very nice but I believe the hardest part of the rally is still to come. The Chinese part of the route promises to be quite a challenge, with some long, hard stages. We need to stayed mobilised and continue to be as efficient as we were last night when the team worked its heart out to get Stéphane and Jean-Paul back on the road this morning. Team Peugeot Total is an exceptional squad, both technically and in sporting terms. Everyone is driven by the same quest for performance.”

Cyril DESPRES (Leg: 15th / Overall: 1st) “A lot of crews are going well! We had the difficult honour of running first on the road again today and there was a great deal of off-road driving. We did the job we had to do and we are still first overall. The second part of the event is quite mouth-watering, with lots of sand and dunes… proper cross-country rallying!”

Sébastien LOEB (Leg: 3rd / Overall: 2nd) “In conditions like this, it’s obviously an advantage to run a little way down the start order because you can see the tracks made by the cars ahead of you. We soon caught the front-runners and it turned out to be a good day for us because we made up time on our main rivals. Being in second place at the rest day is a big confidence booster.”

Stéphane PETERHANSEL (Leg: 2nd / Overall: 71st) “After our crash yesterday, we needed to build up our confidence again and get back into the rhythm. Our start order helped us to make up for lost time because we could see the tracks made by the vehicles ahead of us. There wasn’t much real off-road driving for us because we were behind the fastest trucks and that allowed us to post a good time. All the mechanics spent the night doing everything they could to make sure we could stay in the event and we were even in a position where we were able to fight for the stage win! It’s very pleasing to have posted the second-best time. Our aim now is to help Cyril and Sébastien and make sure there’s a Peugeot on top when we reach Beijing.”

SILK WAY RALLY – LEG 5 : CYRIL DESPRES RECOVERS THE LEAD AS STÉPHANE PETERHANSEL HITS TROUBLE

With 568km against the clock, 250km of liaison distance and a staggering 600 pace notes across 116 pages in the co-drivers’ road books, Leg 5 of the Silk Way Rally was a punishing day indeed. Notwithstanding a lengthy delay for the #100 car, Team Peugeot Total remains in charge at the front of the field, with its other two crews occupying the top two places in the overall standings.

 - Growing daily in confidence and experience – both in terms of driving as well as navigational skills and road book reading – Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA produced a flawless run to post the fastest time of the day. In so doing, they took a commanding stage victory to reclaim the top spot in the overall classification.

 - Their team-mates Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA are in hot pursuit of the new rally leaders, after setting the fifth-fastest time today. Like many of their competitors, the French duo encountered a number of navigational issues.

 - 416km into the stage, two consecutive hazards – a level two followed by a maximum alert level three – sent the PEUGEOT 2008 DKR of Stéphane PETERHANSEL / Jean-Paul COTTRET into a series of rolls. With the #100 entry sustaining significant mechanical damage in the incident, its driving crew did their utmost to rejoin the fray and are currently attempting to get the car back to the bivouac where Peugeot Sport’s team of technicians are awaiting them and ready to get to work to allow PETERHANSEL and COTTRET to restart the rally at the crack of dawn tomorrow.

Bruno FAMIN (Team Peugeot Total, Team Manager / Director, Peugeot Sport) “Cyril and David’s performance today was simply outstanding. They didn’t put so much as a wheel out of place, which has enabled them to establish a very solid lead in the overall standings. Unfortunately, just three kilometres before CP3, Stéphane and Jean-Paul made an error of judgment at a hazard that was marked in the road book. The car suffered significant damage, particularly to the front-left and rear-right suspension. We still don’t know if they will be able to make it to the end of the stage, because they still have approximately 150km to go. One of the objectives behind our participation in the Silk Way Rally is to put miles on the board so we can test the improvements we have made to the car, so we will do everything within our power to allow Stéphane and Jean-Paul to re-start tomorrow. There is still a long way to go in this rally, and other crews will similarly run into difficulties. We are extremely satisfied to have two PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs at the top of tonight’s order.”

Cyril DESPRES (Leg: 1st / Overall: 1st) “This is the first time I have competed on such a long stage – this is real cross-country rallying! It was an exciting challenge, with plenty of changes of rhythm in the vegetation. That wasn’t easy to manage, because each one requires you to adapt your driving style accordingly. If you’d told me this morning that having set out in tenth position, we would be running first on the road for the final 100 kilometres, I would never have believed it. David and I are both marathon men, so we really come into our own on long, demanding stages like the one today.”

Sébastien LOEB (Leg: 5th / Overall: 2nd) “We began the day in good shape, passing [Vladimir] Vasilyev and Stéphane to run first on the road and we settled into a strong rhythm, but then we dropped around 12 minutes when we got stuck between two Way Points and we conceded further time when we stopped to help Stéphane get his car back onto its wheels. As if that wasn’t enough, our throttle then stuck open 100 kilometres from the end of the stage! We took no further risks after that, with the goal being simply to get to the finish and despite all of those issues, we still set the fourth-quickest time.”

Silk Way Rally - SS5: MINI ALL4 Racing battle their way through the longest stage

• Three MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles in the top five

• Al-Rajhi / Gottschalk the quickest MINI ALL4 Racing pairing

Today, on the way from Astana to Balkhash, the teams contesting the Silk Way Rally had to cope with the longest special stage. The MNI ALL4 Racing pairings weren’t ready to get scared by the massive 568.24-kilometre distance and secured the positions two to four, six and 13! The fastest MINI ALL4 Racing pairing in today’s special stage was Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) / Timo Gottschalk (GER) who suffered three tyre damages and came second, nevertheless. Third position was clinched by Kazakh Aidyn Rakhimbayev and his Russian navigator Anton Nikolaev, followed by young Briton Harry Hunt and Andreas Schulz (GER). The Russian pairing Vladimir Vasilyev /Konstantin Zhiltsov finished sixth, with Bauyrzhan Issabayev (KAZ) / Vladimir Demyanenko (RUS) crossing the finish line in 13th position.

Today’s special stage was not only the longest on the 2016 Silk Way Rally schedule but also represented a particular technical challenge – for both the drivers and the co-drivers. “Navigating was anything but easy,” revealed Andreas Schulz, “And so we lost our way for a short time twice. But it also was a beautiful stage: fast, plane sections and in the closing stages, we had to slightly drive up into the mountains.” However, the track featured mud holes throughout the special stages that took the windscreen wipers to their very limits. So, many pairings had to get out of their cars and clean the windows manually.

Following their problems in yesterday’s special stage when they lost time due to an overheated engine, Al-Rajhi / Gottschalk really went for it, today. “This was the longest special stage I contested to date,” said the Saudi. “And it was not only long but also very technical. You had no time for a breather. It was our goal to make it to the top three.” However, the pairing was forced to stop four times: three times due to damaged tyres and once to remove the mud from the windscreen. “The windscreen wipers just weren’t able to cope with the mud and the vision was zero,” added Al-Rajhi.

Rakhimbayev was virtually over the moon after having arrived in the bivouac in Balkhash. “Third place is fantastic,” he beamed. “We had no problems whatsoever and got through very well. In the closing stages we got stuck in the dust of two of our competitors but that was no big deal. Only in China, in the dunes, the rally really will begin.” Hunt also was happy with his result although his day wasn’t trouble-free. “This was the longest special stage in my career so far,” said the Briton. “We had to get out of the car for cleaning the windscreen twice as we had run out of our windscreen cleaning fluid. And in addition, we temporarily had to back off as we had problems with our central differential.”

Vasilyev, however, encountered a day to forget. Thanks to a tyre puncture in the early stages, the competition could close in on him. “We had to stop three times as we got the Sentinel signal to let somebody pass. Furthermore, Peterhansel had an accident and we stopped for a short time but fortunately they both were unharmed,” reported co-driver Zhiltsov. “All this cost us a lot of time. But the rally is far from being over. As I see it, the Chinese special stages will determine the Silk Way Rally.”

Tomorrow, the rally will take the pairings to Almaty, the venue of the rest day on the day after tomorrow. A day of rest the entire rally baggage really needs. Long stages for competitors and service crews in combination with short nights have been a really hard and exhausting experience for all those involved. In Almaty, they all will use the time for a breather before getting back into the cockpits on the way to China.

SS3: Four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles make it to the top 10

• Al-Rajhi / Gottschalk hold second position

• Border crossing from Russia to Kazakhstan

As yesterday’s stage from Kazan to Ufa had to be cancelled due to bad weather conditions, the Silk Way Rally competitors started into their first long special stage today. On the way from Ufa, Russia, to Kostanay, Kazakhstan, they covered 200.43 kilometres against the clock, with four MINI ALL4 Racing vehicles making it to the top 10.

Yazeed Al-Rajhi (KSA) and Timo Gottschalk (GER) finished second, thus being the fastest MINI ALL4 Racing pairings. “At first we had to drive for a long time in the dust of Vasilyev and then in the dust of Loeb,” revealed Al-Rajhi. “Otherwise, we certainly would have been able to be a bit faster – but having finished second also is okay. Today you could have short cut many corners but with the high grass, we preferred to stay on the track.” Meanwhile, Russian pairing Vladimir Vasilyev / Konstantin Zhiltsov finished fourth in the last stage contested in their home country. Some 200 kilometres after the end of the special stage, the entire rally baggage crossed the border to Kazakhstan.

This means that the next stages will be held on the home soil of Kazakh Aidyn Rakhimbayev. Together with his Russian co-driver Anton Nikolaev he finished sixth in today’s special stage, while Harry Hunt (GBR) and Andreas Schulz (GER) came ninth. “This was a truly demanding special stage,” said the Briton. “There were many ways in the high grass and deciding which was the right one wasn’t easy. Therefore, we lost our way for a short time. But we made it to the finish and that was the most important factor” The fifth MINI ALL4 Raining pairing - Issabayev (KAZ) and Demanyenko (RUS) – also came close to making it to the top 10 but had to settle for finishing 11th, in the end.

Tomorrow’s stage will take the field to Kazakhstan’s capital, Astana. The competitors will have to cover 855.69 kilometres, with the special-stage distance amounting to 345.33km. The special stage will be fast, on a hard track surface. However, the teams will have pay attention to ditches.

SILK WAY RALLY – LEG 4 : STEPHANE PETERHANSEL BACK IN COMMAND

While the weather was extremely hot in the Kazakh capital Astana after today’s run, the conditions for the 223.48km stage through tall undergrowth were predominantly sticky mud due to more heavy rain.

 - On completion of today’s competitive section, the Team Peugeot Total crews reported that it felt like their respective PEUGEOT 2008 DKRs weighed 200kg more than they had done when they set out from Kostanay this morning. Mud had stuck everywhere and it even managed to tear away the rear wheel arch guards. Obstacles concealed by the vegetation were behind slow punctures for the #102 and #104 cars.

 - After claiming Monday’s stage, Cyril DESPRES / David CASTERA were first on the road today for a good half of the test which was made particularly challenging by complex navigation. They successfully limited the damage, however, and dropped a minimum amount of time despite falling to fourth overall. Team-mates Stéphane PETERHANSEL / Jean-Paul COTTRET produced a perfectly paced run to win the stage and recover the overall lead. Sébastien LOEB / Daniel ELENA are still third on the provisional leaderboard after posting today’s third-best effort.

 - Tomorrow (Wednesday, July 13), competitors face the longest stage of the rally (568.26km) for a total distance for the day of 820.75km.

TYPE OF TERRAIN : Dirt, mud and marshland
 CONDITIONS : Fast
WEATHER : Rain to begin with; cloudy; 23°C
AVERAGE SPEED : 113.8kph

Bruno FAMIN (Team Manager, Team Peugeot Total / Director, Peugeot Sport) “We’ve got three cars in tonight’s top four, but our rivals aren’t far behind. Some of them dropped time today but they’ve been pushing us on the stages. There isn’t much of a gap in the classification as it stands and, when you see the long stage that awaits everyone tomorrow, it’s clear that this rally has only just started. We need to stay totally focused.”

Stéphane PETERHANSEL (Leg: 1st / Overall: 1st) “The first 60 kilometres or so were muddy and very slippery but also lots of fun. There was quite a lot of navigation again and, running some way sown the start order, we were at an advantage because the trail had already been blazed. That said, the mud thrown up by the cars ahead of us made visibility quite difficult. That said, we reached a top speed of around 185kph at one point despite the conditions being far from ideal. Our car is going well.”

Sébastien LOEB (Leg: 3rd / Overall: 3rd) “You could hardly see the track through the tall grass, so the navigation was quite hard. We got away to a good start and soon caught Cyril and Al-Rahji. The three of us then got lost together several times. After that, we drove in a convoy at the same pace as the car at the front of the field. We ended up with the third-best time without any major drama.”

Cyril DESPRES (Leg: 10th / Overall: 4th) “It was raining when we started the stage and the first 50 kilometres were over untouched fields with nothing to indicate the correct route. The going was also very muddy. Our pace wasn’t very fast and first Al-Rahji, then Sébastien caught us. We ran together after that. We were playing at cat and mouse games when we hit a lump of concrete hidden in the long grass. We punctured but we decided to continue until the end of the stage without changing the wheel. It could have been worse…”
