The action returns once more as we bid farewell to silly season. It will be sand, dunes and competition galore as the first race of the FIM Cross Country Rallies World Championship – the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge – fires up this weekend and Team HRC will be right there in the fray.

Team HRC have now put the Dakar Rally escapade behind them and this weekend it will be all sights set on the next adventure, as the Emirate of Abu Dhabi looms on the horizon, signalling the first date of a new world championship.

Paulo Gonçalves holds particularly fond memories of the event, having had his name and that of Honda etched into the winners list for the first time in last year’s edition.

Likewise, the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge will serve as a crucial test to scout for promising new talent who might one day make up the Team HRC ranks. The squad will thus line up stalwarts Paulo Gonçalves and Joan Barreda alongside youngster Ricky Brabec, who gets to savour the Honda CRF450 RALLY for the first time. Team HRC has signed up Brabec for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge to weigh up whether the American could slot into the outfit at a future date. Last year Ricky Brabec triumphed in the AMA Hare & Hound 2014 Championship, in addition to winning the San Felipe 250, Baja 500 and Baja 1000.

The rally will consist of a short Super Special on the afternoon of Saturday March 28, to be followed by five stages out in the Liwa desert to the south of the country’s capital, made up mainly of lengthy stretches of dunes. In total, 2,091.78 kilometres and, of these, 1,306.27 km special stage.

Martino Bianchi:  It is good to be at the race again two months after the end of the Dakar . It was a good period of repose in order to prepare the new season and make a few adjustments to the new team format. The Cross-Countries Rally World Championship races are the best way to prepare the team for the next Dakar. Also, our target here is to defend Paulo’s win last year in Abu Dhabi and Barreda’s in Qatar, where we are going to race in a few weeks. It is also a great chance to test new possibilities for team members, and as Honda is always keen to look for promising young riders, we will give the chance to let 23-year-old Ricky Brabec participate here on a HRC factory bike. I wish the team all the best. Enjoy the race and have fun, as this is one of the most enjoyable rallies of the year!

Wolfgang Fischer:  Team HRC is ready to compete in the first round of the FIM Cross-Countries Rally World Championship of 2015 at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. After a well-deserved break after the Dakar Rally, we’ve got our energy back and the riders have undergone an intensive physical training and are keen to go at the next race and show their performance. Paolo Goncalves, who was the winner of last year’s Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge and runner-up in the world championship is here to try and defend his title, with the proven assistance of his team-mate Joan Barreda, who will be hoping to get a better result after his bad luck in the Dakar. Joining the two guys is a new face in the team, a young guy from the USA, Ricky Brabec who will be here to put his talent for rally on display and get some support for the team from the younger generation. All in all, everything went well in the preparations and we are looking forward to administrative checks and the first stage in two days.

Countdown to the new rally season. It’s ten weeks since the Dakar 2015 ended and Joan Barreda is now all fired up and ready to get down to business with Team HRC at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Back to the grind!

Joan Barreda is a man on mission: to dispel the chills and the snow of his Andorra home and get a full-emersion thaw-out in the first round of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship with the heat of the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Barreda has made a trip back to his folk’s garage in his native Torreblanca, Castellón, to pack up his bags and grab one last training session before remounting the Honda CRF450 RALLY. The high temperatures and dunes of the Emirates will welcome the Team HRC star shortly.

Just a couple of days to go until the start of the 2015 FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship. After such an intense Dakar, the World Championship now takes us back to the sand and dune-filled rallies where you feel most at home.

Yeah, sure. After a bit of time off, we’re back and have been doing some physical training before returning to the competition. We start up with the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge – a quite different rally from the Dakar – with a lot of sand, dunes and quite a bit of navigation. There, it’s important to be in top physical shape so as to keep a steady pace, as well as to maintain the mentality agility needed for having the strength and will to attack and win.

Have you been able to get any rest after the Dakar? How have you been preparing the return to competition?

At the Dakar you get the top-level in every sense, because it’s the greatest test and you have to give it everything. Once it’s over, it’s fundamental to rest both physically and mentally and make sure that you really put the old season well and truly behind you. We’ve now started the first part of the pre-season. We use the start of the year to train in motocross for a few weeks to increase stamina, speed and have a bit of fun with the motocross bikes while doing some quality training.

Last year it was team-mate Paulo Gonçalves who won this race. What are we to expect this time?

Last year was a great all-round team effort that saw Paulo win the race. But you should bear in mind that these are really tight, sprint races and the difference between the riders is minimal. I think that there will be five or six riders in the running for the victory, including some of the local riders who know the race really well and could be at an advantage.

Will you be aiming at a win in the first race of the 2015 season?

I think that I arrive here in really good shape, especially physically. I’ve had a month and a half of intense training in Andorra, in both the gym and outside with other disciplines such as skiing. This, together with the training on the cross bike, which really works the agility, rhythm and manoeuvrability on the bike, means that I’m arriving in Abu Dhabi in top form for the first race. We come here with a lot of will to win and without pressure. I believe that if we keep our concentration without making any mistakes, we will be in the running for victory in the rally once again.

The first two rallies of the season, Abu Dhabi and Qatar, which you won last year and put you ahead in the championship, are very different from the ones to be disputed in Sardinia, Atacama and Morocco.

Qatar and Abu Dhabi are rallies with a lot of dunes. They are also very heterogeneous. In Abu Dhabi we navigate with a lot of GPS and waypoint eclipse (WPE) with an open arrow. In Qatar, the terrain is different: there is a lot of track and paths that are not marked. It’s rockier and needs navigation using waypoint masqué (WPM) with a closed arrow that only opens at 800 metres from the point, which complicates everything. I think that it’s the most difficult rally of the world championship. We go from a very physically demanding rally without much navigation to another which is more technical with complicated navigation.

Has your season been planned?

Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, we think that from June we will have the Dakar 2016 bike, which we will have to run in. I probably won’t be doing all the races in the world championship. I’d also like to race in the Baja Aragón, which I missed last year while I was getting over the problem that I had in Sardinia. It’s a race on home soil that I’d like to take part in, as well as the Ruta 40 and the China Grand Rally. They are two very interesting events for this season. We’ll take it as it comes.

Your team-mate Paulo will be fighting for the championship. He finished runner-up last year.

Honda really trusts in the teamwork that we have been doing, especially over the last year. We are on the right path and the aim is to win the Dakar. The whole season is focused on the Dakar. This allows us to prepare well and put in the kilometres, without having to battle at the extremely high pace of the world championship, which means I am able to compete in whatever other rallies I feel like to help develop and work on the bike. Paulo will be aiming at the world championship and I’ll be trying for the Dakar. It’s a great line of work and we will be fighting to achieve both aims.

We don’t know much about the Dakar 2016 yet, although soon the ASO will announce the first outline of the race.

The Dakar is trying to revamp itself, to change and to explore new territories. We hope that it continues that way and keeps on adding new countries because over the last few years we have been repeating quite a lot. I’d personally like it if we entered Peru, although there are many factors that will be involved in deciding the Dakar route. We’ll know about it in three weeks.

Regarding the bike. Will there be any changes made to the one that you rode in the last Dakar?

The base will be the same as they did a lot of work on the chassis for the last Dakar. There might also be some minor details concerning the engine and weight, but all that is to be defined later.

· QMMF gains FIA waiver to make route navigation more challenging

· Entries close for Sealine Cross-Country Rally on Thursday, April 2

There is just over a week to go before entries officially close for this year’s Sealine Cross-Country Rally, the third round of the 2015 FIA World Cup for Cross-Country Rallies and round two of the FIM Cross-Country Rallies World Championship, which will take place on April 18-24.

Officials at the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) have received interest from across the world from teams keen to face the challenges of five gruelling selective sections across the Qatar desert.

Two-time Dakar Rally winner Joan ‘Nani’ Roma is the latest addition to the list of entrants already received for the Sealine event, which gets underway from the Losail International Circuit on Monday, April 20.

Roma, 43, won the Dakar Rally on a factory KTM motorcycle in 2004 and followed in the foot steps of the French duo of Hubert Auriol and Stéphane Peterhansel to repeat his winning feat in a car – a Mini All4 Racing – in 2014. The Spaniard has yet to announce his co-driver for this year’s Sealine event, although Frenchman Michel Périn has been his regular navigator in recent years.

Roma began his enduro racing career as early as 1991 by finishing second in the 125cc category of the Spanish Junior Cross-Country Championship. He graduated to the senior European series the following season and went on to win a sequence of gold and bronze medals at the prestigious International Six Days Enduro (ISDE). He first competed in the Dakar Rally in 1996 and began to carve out a career on two wheels in cross-country rallying, initially with the BMW team and then with KTM.

Roma’s first taste of rallying in a car was in the 2004 Qatar Baja at the wheel of a Mitsubishi Pajero MPR9 with the late Henri Magne as his co-driver. He finished second that time out behind Al-Attiyah’s Chevrolet Pro Truck and went on to finish third, second and fourth in the Dakar Rally before his victory in 2014.

The German X-raid team that runs factory and customer Mini All4 Racings won the Sealine Cross-Country Rally last year with Qatar’s leading driver Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah and has entered a strong driver line-up this year.

One notable addition to the X-raid customer line up will be the young Briton Harry Hunt, who is also set to tackle the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge this coming weekend with the experienced German navigator Andreas Schulz. Hunt has made the switch from more conventional special stage rallying - where he won the Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) 2WD Cup for the second time in 2012 - and will compete in Qatar for the first time.

The QMMF continues to make ground-breaking improvements within the organisation of the Sealine event and the federation has been granted an FIA waiver for sporting and environmental reasons in connection to the way that competitors navigate their way across the selective sections through the desert.

“To validate any route waypoint, a competitor must pass within 90 metres of it this year,” said clerk of the course Pedro Almeida. “In the current FIA regulations, to validate a WPE (eclipse waypoint) or a WPM (hidden waypoint), which represents 95% of the waypoints at the Sealine event, a competitor must pass within 200 metres of it.

“This means in the regulations for our event this year, validating waypoints becomes a more accurate task for co-drivers and makes it more difficult for drivers, especially in sand dunes and difficult terrain.”
