"Dakar” winners amongst themselves: de Villiers in Russia in front of Sainz

The lead has changed at the "Dakar” dress rehearsal in Russia: the Volkswagen drivers Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D) have taken the overall lead at the Silk Way Rally on clinching their third stage win. On the fourth of eight legs the 2009 "Dakar” winning duo prevailed against its Volkswagen team colleagues Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) who had decided this year’s "Dakar” in their favour. 1m 35s now separate de Villiers/von Zitzewitz and Sainz/Cruz in the overall classification. Third place on the stage between Lipetsk and Volgograd plus third overall went to Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) in the third factory-prepared and factory-fielded Race Touareg. Fourth overall was secured by the fourth Volkswagen "Dakar” duo, Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) who set the day’s fourth-best time.

Leg four of the Silk Way Rally from Lipetsk to Volgograd took the teams through four different vegetation zones: from mixed forests through wooded steppe and steppe regions all the way to the semi-desert in which Volgograd is located. 60 per cent of the 298.05-kilometre special stage of the rally consisted of sandy ground and put the contenders to the test with tricky navigation and demanding undulating, partially wooded sections which required superb driving skills.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"Today our ‘Dakar’ dress rehearsal started in earnest. The leg was difficult – for the car as well as for the drivers and co-drivers. There were many sandy sections and demanding navigational tasks. I think that victory will continue to be decided between Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers and Nasser Al-Attiyah. But there’s no doubt in my mind at all that the decision to contest the Silk Way Rally was absolutely right. It’s a perfect competitive test for the 2011 Dakar Rally.”

#100 – Carlos Sainz (E), 2nd place leg / 2nd place overall
"We were actually having a wonderful day until I braked too late at a fork in the road and stalled the engine. By the time it started again we’d already lost some time. That’s really a shame because except for that everything was going well today. Tomorrow we’ll be in for a tough day on which we want to recover the ground we lost today.”

#101 – Giniel de Villiers (ZA), 1st place leg / 1st place overall
"Fourth leg, third stage win – you could hardly wish for more than that. We had a flawless day, no incidents. The Race Touareg was running like clockwork and my co-driver Dirk von Zitzewitz did an outstanding job, properly judged all the intersections and immediately found the way points in the dunes.”

#102 – Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 3rd place leg / 3rd place overall
"Unfortunately, we had a bit of misfortune today because a hose clamp on the intercooler broke at a pretty early stage – something that normally never happens. We wanted to make up the three minutes we lost due to the repair and suffered a puncture in the process. Clearly, this was not my day. But tomorrow there’ll be another chance to catch up to the top, and I’m determined to use it.”

#104 – Mark Miller (USA), 4th place leg / 4th place overall
"The navigation was difficult again today and unfortunately it caused us to lose time. Twice we didn’t immediately find the way. But this doesn’t explain the loss of time we suffered in the dunes. They were hard to handle because they dropped down very steeply on the back. At the finish I was surprised about the times set by our team colleagues. I want to and will learn from that for the ‘Dakar.’”

Number of the day

The total deflection and top-out travel of the damper pistons on the car of Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz on the fourth leg amounted to 41,825.8 metres. The Race Touareg 3 vehicles are fitted with two dampers per wheel from technology partner ZF Sachs. The suspension travel is limited to a maximum of 250 millimetres by the regulations.

Entrevista a Nuno Matos

Volkswagen drivers continue to set the pace in Russia

Volkswagen continues to set the pace at its "Dakar” dress rehearsal in Russia with a solid team performance. The 2009 "Dakar” winners decided the third leg of the Silk Way Rally in their favour: Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D) celebrated the second stage win between Vyazma and Lipetsk on leg 03 of the rally. By finishing the special stage as the runners-up Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) defended their overall lead. Five legs before the finish in Sochi their advantage amounts to 1m 19s. Third place today went to the duo Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D), who after four and a half hours of driving time are at an equal overall time level with de Villiers/von Zitzewitz. Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) set the fourth-best time in the fourth Race Touareg.

The third leg of the Silk Way Rally from Vyazma to Lipetsk primarily put the communication between the drivers and co-drivers to the test. Many branch-offs, forks in the roads and intersections required the co-drivers’ full concentration. The drivers were faced with a demanding gravel stage featuring many quick directional changes.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"Volkswagen can be proud of its squad today because we’ve shown a good team performance on this tricky leg. The drivers in particular did a flawless job and the mechanics prepared four perfect Race Touareg vehicles. For the co-drivers it was a difficult day. They made some minor mistakes today and got lost. Something like this shouldn’t happen at the ‘Dakar.’”

#100 – Carlos Sainz (E), 2nd place leg / 1st place overall
"I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a leg with so many branch-offs as I have today. There was an incredible amount of work for my co-driver Lucas Cruz and branch-offs, branch-offs, branch-offs. Therefore, opening the special stage today was no advantage because we couldn’t use the tracks of other drivers for orientation. So, we can be more than pleased with the day’s result even though the situation in the overall standings is pretty tight. We need to continue to stay concentrated.”

#101 – Giniel de Villiers (ZA), 1st place leg / 2nd place overall
"We had a good day today, even though it didn’t feel like it in the car at first. We also made some minor mistakes at the many intersections – as did our team colleagues. Well, those were the characteristics of this leg. And all in all we managed to deliver a solid drive.”

#102 – Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 3rd place leg / 3rd place overall
"We wanted to close up to our team colleague Carlos Sainz who opened the stage in front of us – unfortunately we lost a few seconds in the end. But nothing’s been decided yet at this rally by a long shot. Just looking at the overall standings shows this. We’re all close together.”

#104 – Mark Miller (USA), 4th place leg / 5th place overall
"Today, perfect communication in the cockpit was crucial. My co-driver Ralph Pitchford and I managed this almost across the whole distance. Unfortunately, we made a navigation error at the beginning of the leg. On another occasion I misunderstood Ralph and took a turn where we should have gone straight ahead. That cost time. But on the whole it was a good leg for us.”

Number of the day

On the third special stage the co-drivers announced instructions to the drivers about every 8.8 seconds. The roadbook for the 207.25-kilometre route included 62 pages and 307 pictures. Each picture contains up to four different pieces of information and is repeated three times on average.

Stage win for new Volkswagen "Dakar” Touareg

A brilliant competitive debut for the new Volkswagen Race Touareg 3: right on the second leg of its "Dakar” dress rehearsal the 310-hp cross-country rally prototype decided the first special stage in its favour. Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) completed the second leg of the Silk Way Rally through Russia in the AWD vehicle’s first competition by setting the fastest time overall.

On the split special stage between Staraya Russa und Vyazma their Volkswagen team colleagues Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D) had to admit defeat by just a narrow margin. Both pairings are now leading the overall classification of the Silk Way Rally. Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) after having lost some time on yesterday’s opening leg improved to seventh overall after finishing today’s special stage in third place. Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz set the fourth-best time on today’s 173-kilometre special stage. The 2009 "Dakar” winners are now ranking in third place overall.

The first part of the route of the second special stage took the entrants from Staraya Russa to Vyazma along many water passages and sodden stretches through woods. Quick gravel passages that resembled sprint rally stages and thanks to long flat-out sections featured a high average speed of more than 150 km/h were on the agenda of the second part.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"Today we gathered valuable data with both the Race Touareg 3 and the predecessor model that will be very exciting for us to analyse. Carlos Sainz in the new vehicle featuring the 2011 ‘Dakar’ configuration won the special stage thus showing the car’s potential. Nasser Al-Attiyah is driving an intermediate stage here whereas Giniel de Villiers and Mark Miller are running in the 2010-specification ‘Dakar’ version of the Race Touareg 2. All four vehicles ran superbly – so we can be pleased with the day’s yield.”

#100 – Carlos Sainz (E), 1st place leg / 1st place overall
"The leg today went the way I’m always wishing for it to go: without the slightest problem and with a top-notch car. The first part of the split special stage was very demanding to drive while the second part featured many high-speed passages. I’m a bit proud to have given the Race Touareg 3 its first stage win – but obviously we’re not out to clinch individual stage victories but to prepare for the 2011 ‘Dakar’. We’re on a good track for that.”

#101 – Giniel de Villiers (ZA), 4th place leg / 3rd place overall
"Today I had the honour to open the stage as yesterday’s stage winner. That was very difficult particularly on the first part because the route contained a lot of water and mud and we lost some time there. We let our team colleague Nasser Al-Attiyah pass and therefore had to let ourselves drop back in the dust of the second part of the leg. Nevertheless, I’m pleased with the result.”

#102 – Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 2nd place leg / 2nd place overall
"I liked this leg a lot because it fit my driving style. I felt very comfortable and found a good rhythm. But we also saw the speed of the new Race Touareg 3 today in which Carlos won the stage. That’s good news too – especially with respect to the 2011 ‘Dakar.’"

#104 – Mark Miller (USA), 3rd place leg / 7th place overall
"This was a special stage with two extremely different characteristics. We haven’t had as much mud and water as we did on the first part in a long time and were struggling with visibility some of the time. The second part was completely different and demanded high top speed. We pushed the limits. Subjectively, we just lifted a maximum of five, six times. The rest was flat-out.”

Number of the day

The Silk Way Rally, which is organised by the "Dakar” organiser A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation), has a large media reach. About 45 TV channels in 178 countries air reports of the cross-country rally through Russia.

Volkswagen starts into "Dakar” dress rehearsal with one-two lead.

Volkswagen started to the Silk Way Rally through Russia with a one two-stage lead. On the first leg between St. Petersburg and Staraya Russa the 2009 Dakar Rally winners, Giniel de Villiers/Dirk von Zitzewitz (ZA/D), in the Volkswagen Race Touareg set the fastest time of the day with a 2.06-minute lead ahead of their team colleagues Nasser Al-Attiyah/Timo Gottschalk (Q/D).
Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz (E/E) followed with a 2.29-minute gap in fourth place today. Mark Miller/Ralph Pitchford (USA/ZA) lost 25.03 minutes to their Volkswagen team colleagues on the near-86-kilometre route due to water in the electronics system.
The leg from St. Petersburg to Staraya Russa put the entrants to the test with many branch-offs which made the navigation difficult. In addition, various water passages and long wooded sections with soft sand were characteristic of this special stage.

Kris Nissen (Volkswagen Motorsport Director)
"The Silk Way Rally serves as our ‘Dakar’ dress rehearsal but considering the cold temperatures and the large amount of rain there was no desert feeling today. This makes the first special stage a demanding one for the drivers and co-drivers as well. Three of our Race Touareg vehicles worked perfectly but with the fourth one we unfortunately encountered a minor problem due to a lot of rain penetrating the system. The electronics of Mark Miller’s car failed some of the time. We’ll do everything within our means during the service to assure that this phenomenon won’t occur again.”

#100 – Carlos Sainz (E), 4th place leg / 4th place overall
"After just a few kilometres something broke on the bonnet after we went through water. As a result, it was raised a bit on one side which impaired the visibility of my co-driver Lucas Cruz. That’s why a navigation error cost us some time at a blind spot. But the rally is still long enough for us to recover this mishap.”

#101 – Giniel de Villiers (ZA), 1st place leg / 1st place overall
"This starting leg was definitely more difficult than we’d thought. Both in terms of the driving and the navigation the first day was very demanding. Staying on the track was crucial to keep from damaging the car. Just one navigation mistake – and we could have lost a lot of time correcting it. But thanks to Dirk’s perfect job this didn’t happen to us.”

#102 – Nasser Al-Attiyah (Q), 2nd place leg / 2nd place overall
"Today was about managing a good start to the rally and finding the right rhythm. That’s why we drove with just a calculated risk. The leg was pretty demanding, considering it was just a starting stage. Second place is a good starting base for tomorrow. I think our days at this rally are still coming up.”

#104 – Mark Miller (USA), 17th place leg / 17th place overall
"Unfortunately, we didn’t have full engine power in the middle of the special stage for some kilometres today – water apparently penetrated the electronics system. The positive thing about it was that our Touareg practically repaired itself afterwards – and we were able to finish the special stage at a regular pace. It wasn’t the best possible start for us.”

Number of the day
The 2010 Silk Way Rally is the first cross-country rally held according to the new navigation rules. So-called hidden way points ("Way Point masked” (WPM)) are indicated on the co-drivers’ displays only when approaching them at a distance of 400 metres. In the past, the way points were shown at a three-kilometre distance. The first leg featured a total of seven of these new WPMs – and the Volkswagen co-drivers handled them perfectly.

2º Aniversário do MaisTT
