Benavides wins the fourth stage and Barreda still Merzouga Rally leader with one day left

A tricky yet positive day for Monster Energy Honda Team on the penultimate day of the Merzouga Rally. Joan Barreda continues to command the race overall, while Kevin Benavides performed well on the day, finishing the stage in first place and confirming his second place in the general standings.

With just the final day of the Merzouga Rally still to run, Joan Barreda is in a solid position to claim overall victory tomorrow. Today saw the fourth stage – the second leg of the marathon stage – in which riders were unable to receive mechanical assistance until they arrived back at the Tombouctou Hotel camp once the 372-kilometre stage had been completed. The stage served up a combination of dunes, sands, stony ground and trial-like areas. On the way riders had to tackle dust-filled Moroccan track and a final section which caused many riders serious navigation problems with the main group riding around in circles in search of an elusive waypoint. This afternoon race authorities decided to cancel the final section of the course.

 Joan Barreda, starting out from first place, was eventually caught by Kevin Benavides, who battled hard throughout the day. The pair rode virtually together until the final waypoint where they were reached by another group of competitors including Brabec and Cornejo. Barreda finished the day eighth while Benavides was the fastest rider winning his third stage of the rally so far. American Ricky Brabec turned out his best performance to date with a second place finish. Paulo Gonçalves, who started from behind was able to make up time to finish seventh on the day. José Ignacio Cornejo’s stage was inconvenienced by a navigation error which saw him finish seventeenth.

 The final stage of this Merzouga Rally will have a motocross style start in line before completing a full loop in the Erg Chebbi. The motorcycle riders will start out after the buggies and quads on a 206.71-kilometre stage, 100% of which will be fought out in the dunes.

António Maio em 2º no Dakar Challenge

Piloto Yamaha 12º à geral em etapa Maratona 

António Maio teve hoje no Merzouga Rally um excelente desempenho. Num setor seletivo com 233 quilómetros cronometrados realizado após uma noite em que foram os próprios pilotos a fazerem a revisão às suas motos, o piloto da equipa Yamaha Fino Motor Racing foi o segundo mais rápido entre mais de meia centena de concorrentes ao Dakar Challenge, competição destinada aos pilotos que nunca participaram no Dakar.

 António Maio, atual campeão nacional, disputou uma etapa com uma primeira parte de dunas que antecedia uma zona mais rápida que levava até o planalto de Errachidia, onde um labirinto de pistas tornava a navegação muito difícil.

  “Senti-me bem e com mais confiança. Passados os primeiros dias de corrida começo a estar cada vez mais à vontade. Ontem já tinha estado bem e para hoje sabia que a minha Yamaha estava em boas condições. A primeira parte da etapa, rápida, ainda me deu mais confiança. Tive apenas uma ligeira queda e no reabastecimento reparei uma peça que tinha ficado danificada. Entrei na zona mais complicada de navegação muito seguro e correu tudo bem. Estou muito satisfeito. Por mim era agora que o rali podia começar”, salientou o piloto Marcolino Sebo, no final da etapa.

 A derradeira etapa, sempre espetacular, é totalmente disputada nas dunas ao longo de quase 50 quilómetros. Tem a particularidade de os pilotos das motos partirem todos ao mesmo tempo

Terceira vitória para Mário Patrão no Morocco Desert Challenge

Mário Patrão venceu hoje pela terceira vez uma etapa no Morocco Desert Challenge reforçando assim a liderança que ocupa desde o início desta grande maratona africana. Na quinta etapa, que ligou Fezzou a Merzouga, o piloto inscrito pelo CRÉDITO AGRICOLA KTM BAHCO gastou 4hh49m13s no setor cronometrado de 275 quilómetros onde encontrou um pouco de tudo.

  “Esta quinta etapa foi deveras demolidora. Tivemos um pouco de tudo. Começámos bem com planícies de areia mas depois tivemos muitos quilómetros com caminhos rochosos antes de virem as dunas. Primeiro as de Ouzina e depois uma travessia do Erg Chebbi. Continuo bastante satisfeito com a forma como a prova está a decorrer e com o que estou a aproveitar e a evoluir. A nossa KTM continua sem dar problemas e também me estou a sentir muito bem na navegação, abrindo a pista sem cometer erros”, referiu Mário Patrão no final da etapa

 Amanhã será o último dia nas dunas, mas a etapa promete ser mais uma vez muito exigente. Com uma especial cronometrada de 306 quilómetros cronometrados começa com o cruzamento norte-sul das dunas mais altas de Marrocos, no Erg Chebbi, seguido de outra seção de dunas em Erg Znaigui. A partir daqui o traçado muda para uma mistura de ouades arenosos com rápidas e técnicas.

Inscrições abertas para a 30ª edição da Baja TT Capital dos Vinhos de Portugal

Já estão abertas as inscrições para uma das mais emblemáticas competições do Campeonato Nacional de Todo-o-Terreno, a Baja TT Capital dos Vinhos de Portugal – Reguengos de Monsaraz, quarta jornada do Campeonato Moto, Quad e SSV e a terceira do calendário Auto, que se realiza de 25 a 27 de maio e que este ano comemora a sua 30ª edição.

 Para celebrar a efeméride, a Secção de Motorismo da Sociedade Artistica Reguenguense, entidade que ao longo destes trinta anos, ininterruptamente, se tem dedicado à organização desta prova alentejana, anuncia várias novidades que reforçam a excelência desta competição e sua imagem enquanto evento de referência do todo-o-terreno em Portugal.

 A Baja TT Capital dos Vinhos de Portugal, contará com um programa de animação complementar. As viaturas de competição estarão expostas no Parque da Cidade, haverá uma cerimónia de partida que terá início às 21 horas de sexta-feira complementada com um espetáculo pirotécnico que dará o mote para o arranque da competição e serão homenageadas algumas entidades e pessoas que marcaram a prova ao longo da sua história.

 A prova alentejana vai contemplar mais dois fortíssimos motivos de atração: o arranque de um novo desafio Ibérico, o Troféu Terras do Grande Lago Alqueva e o Troféu Casa Valadas.

 O Troféu Terras do Grande Lago Alqueva destinado à competição Auto, resulta de uma organização conjunta entre a Secção Motorismo da SAR e o Motor Club Villafranca de los Barrios (Espanha) e contempla a realização de duas provas, a primeira das quais, a Baja TT de Reguengos de Monsaraz e a segunda, o Rally TT Baja Dehesa de Extremadura, que irá decorrer nos dias 9 e 10 de Junho, em Espanha. Serão premiados os três primeiros da classificação geral das categorias T1 e T2, no valor total de 10.000 euros a atribuir.

 Para este ano comemorativo do trigésimo aniversário da prova, a SAR volta a anunciar a realização do Troféu Casa Valadas, destinado aos pilotos Moto e Quad do Concelho de Reguengos de Monsaraz que poderão inscrever-se a um preço mais baixo. Serão ainda atribuídos prémios aos três primeiros classificados e ainda cheques-oferta do patrocinador.

 Mas há mais: Os vencedores de cada uma das categorias (Moto, Quad, SSV e Auto) vão ainda receber vouchers de alojamento de um fim de semana no Concelho, resultante de uma parceria entre a Secção de Motosrismo da SAR com as seguintes unidades hoteleiras: Casa do Avô Zezinho; Casa Dona Antónia; Casa da Tia Anica; Horta da Moura; Hospedaria Os Condes; Hotel São Lourenço do Barrocal; Monte da Avó Chica; Reguengos Hotel; Residêncial O Gato e Solar de Alqueva.

 De lembrar que a Baja TT Capital dos Vinhos de Portugal – Reguengos de Monsaraz, será pontuável para o Campeonato Nacional de Todo-o-Terreno sobre a égide da Federação de Motociclismo de Portugal contando também para o Troféu Polaris, Troféu Can-Am e Taça Yamaha. No âmbito da Federação Portuguesa de Automobilismo e Karting, ao Campeonato de Portugal de Todo-o-Terreno juntam-se a Taça de Portugal de TT, Taça Ibérica de TT e Desafio Total/Mazda (FPAK).

 Esta prova que, é tradicionalmente muito bem acolhida tanto por pilotos como pelo público, faz questão de manter o seu nome associado à Capital dos Vinhos de Portugal apostando num novo patrocinador, a CONSILCAR, e também na promoção do maior Centro Oleiro da Península Ibérica e das tradicionais Mantas de Reguengos sendo, desta forma, um meio privilegiado na divulgação do que de melhor se produz na região.

NASSER AL-ATTIYAH EXTENDS HIS OUTRIGHT LEAD WITH SECOND STAGE WIN IN QATAR

· Poland’s Przygonski loses time with navigational woes; Domzala in third 

 · Qatar’s Adel Abdulla extends leads in T2; early T3 advantage for Fournier 

 · Poland’s Maciej Giemza on track for FIM success; Maksimov leads the quads 

Qatar’s Nasser Saleh Al-Attiyah and French co-driver Matthieu Baumel romped to an emphatic victory on the opening 358.15km desert stage of the Manateq Qatar Cross-Country Rally on Thursday.

The day’s stage started south-west of Losail and wound its way through the remote western wastelands before crossing the bottom of the country to finish near Sealine in the south. The Toyota Hilux driver began the day positioned eighth on the road, but he delivered another polished performance to extend his overall advantage in the fourth round of the FIA World Cup to 16min 07sec.

Al-Attiyah said: “It was a good job today, but it was a very difficult stage and not easy for the navigation. We lose a little bit of time searching for the road and we had one flat tyre, but I am quite happy to be here. Many people made mistakes today. Tomorrow is another day and we try to do our best.”

Poland’s Jakub Przygonski lost some time in the middle of the stage with his own navigational issues, but the X–Raid MINI driver hit back over the closing kilometres to pull clear of fellow countryman Aron Domzala to snatch the second quickest time and move up to a similar position in the standings.

  “We are happy for second position but we are not so happy with the rhythm today,” said Przygonski. “The speed was okay but we had a lot of navigation mistakes and we lost a lot of time on this, maybe 12 or 14 minutes. This is when Aron (Domzala) catch us. But we are still in the game and the car is perfect. We need to focus on the next days and not make any mistakes.”

Dutchman Erik van Loon put Wednesday evening’s Losail mishap to the back of his mind and clocked the fourth quickest time to move up the field to seventh. Saudi Arabia’s Yasir Seaidan and Russian Vladimir Vasilyev finished the stage in fourth and fifth overall and held fifth and fourth in the overall classification, respectively.

FIA World Cup leader Martin Prokop slipped to sixth in the rankings after losing his way in the desert. The Ford F-150 Evo driver said: “The stage was not the most difficult and was quite nice to drive, but it was navigation that was big trouble for us. We struggled a lot. We got lost really properly in the first 55km. It took a long time to find the right way again. Then we were looking for a waypoint after 200km and really struggling. It’s a disappointment. The speed was good, the car was perfect. It was a good decision to start 10th. But the two big mistakes have cost us this race. We try and do a good job o the last three stages.”

Qatar’s Adel Abdulla increased his lead in the T2 category for series production cross-country vehicles after Saudi Arabian championship rival Ahmed Shegawi suffered technical problems before PC2. The QMMF and Ooredoo-backed Nissan Patrol driver also held an impressive 10th overall.

Frenchman Claude Fournier romped to the T3 stage win in his Polaris RZR 1000 and moved up to an impressive eighth in the overall rankings, after series rival José Luis Pena Campo of Spain lost time early on and both Italy’s Michele Cinotto and Spaniard Santiago Navarro were delayed.

The Qatar debut of Toyota GAZOO Racing South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers came to a premature and painful halt when co-driver Robert Howie complained of back pain shortly after a heavy landing in a deep hole shortly before the first passage control. De Villiers took the sensible decision to retire the Toyota.

De Villiers said: “It was at the end of a shott and I guess there should have been a couple of cautions in the road book. I braked hard but, unfortunately, Rob injured his back and was in a lot of pain. I decided to stop. His health is more important. There is nothing wrong with the car. I wait to see if he is okay after the medical checks.

“Other than that, the navigation is really tricky and I don’t like the system of not being able to go back if you miss a waypoint. We missed a waypoint and got the new one before we knew that we had missed the previous one. It’s not a good system at all. It makes it impossible on the navigation side.” 

Polish Orlen Team rider Maciej Giemza maintained a level head and survived the rigours of navigating alone from the front to card a stage time of 5hrs 47min 56sec on the sole motorcycle. Russian Alexsandr Maksimov was a comfortable leader of the quad category after Dutch rival Kees Koolen stopped with fuel pump problems on the day’s stage and lost a lot of time.

Giemza said: “It was a great experience to open the stage for the first time. We know how hard the Qatar stages are for navigation and I heard that some of the best guys in the cars also lost some waypoints today. I am happy about the clean stage without a crash. I hope to do better navigation tomorrow.”

The difficulty of the stage decimated the field running in the Manateq Qatar National Baja and T2 leader Adel Abdulla – who is eligible for both rallies – stormed to the top of the leader board in his TOK Sport Nissan Patrol Y62.

Despite losing over an hour, Al-Shegawi (Toyota) held fifth place behind the Qatari, second-placed Kuwait’s Thuwaini Al-Nahel (Polaris) and the Qatari duo of Mohammed Al-Meer (Nissan) and Sheikh Hamed bin Eid Al-Thani (Nissan).

Overnight leader Abdulaziz Al-Bsheyer, Nayef Al-Nasr, Ahmed Allouh and Mohammed Al-Attiyah all suffered their own fair share of mechanical issues and delays on the treacherous special.

SS2 – as it happened

Giemza led his quad rivals into the special and Vasilyev drew the short straw of leading the way for the cars. Al-Attiyah started in eighth and series leader Prokop was 10th. The FIM entrants were running together soon after the start, with Maksimov holding the virtual stage lead after catching his rivals.

Al-Attiyah began his charge from the outset and moved over 55 seconds clear of Przygonski at PC1, after 23.59km. Seaidan and Prokop were also running strongly but Saudi Arabia’s Khalid Al-Feraihi was forced to stop after just 12km to change a punctured rear-right tyre.

Al-Shegawi moved ahead of Adel Abdulla in the T2 duel and Fournier edged in front of Navarro in T3 after Pena Campo lost time. Muneef Al-Salmani edged into a slender lead over Nasser Al-Ajmi and Al-Shegawi in the National section.

PC2, after 153.82km, acted as the refuelling point for the bike and quads and the finish line for the Manateq Qatar National Baja entrants. Przygonski overtook both Vasilyev and Domzala and reached the checkpoint in 1hr 31min 15sec, but still ceded 3min 01sec to Al-Attiyah, who had moved up from eighth to third on the road.

Robert Howie had complained of back pain and De Villiers took the sensible decision to retire his Toyota between PC1 and PC2. Howie was taken to hospital for routine medical checks.

Giemza safely reached refuelling 19min 43sec in front of Maksimov, but there was no sign of Koolen, who had lost his quad lead to the Russian after stopping to repair a fuel pump issue on his Barren Racing BR1690 around 30km before the checkpoint. Koolen eventually reached refuelling nearly one and a half hours adrift of his rival.

The stage then headed south across fast rocky desert before switching in a south-easterly direction across the foot of Qatar to finish with a run through the sand dunes on the east coast, near Sealine.

Domzala closed in on a troubled Przygonski through PC4, but there was no stopping Al-Attiyah and the Qatari romped to a comfortable stage win. Przygonski put earlier navigational delays to the back of his mind to confirm second position and Domzala came home in third.

Friday

Tomorrow (Friday), competitors tackle another mammoth loop stage across the State of Qatar. The 340.54km selective section begins to the north of Losail and passes around the northern extremities of the country before cutting across the uppermost deserts to run down the western coast to finish off the Al-Kharsaah Road, west of Doha.

António Maio no Top 5 do Dakar Challenge

Piloto Yamaha em etapa Maratona 

A jornada de hoje do Merzouga Rally, juntamente com a de manhã, faz parte de uma longa etapa maratona em que os pilotos pernoitam num acampamento totalmente isolado, sem a companhia das suas equipas de assistência. Um bivoauc onde o campeão nacional António Maio terá a seu cargo a revisão da sua Yamaha para enfrentar os 233 quilómetros cronometrados da segunda parte desta etapa maratona.

 Hoje o piloto da equipa Yamaha Fino Motor Racing cumpriu o dia realizando o 5º melhor tempo entre mais de meia centena de concorrentes ao Dakar Challenge, competição destinada aos pilotos que nunca participaram no Dakar.

 No final da etapa António Maio salientou que “nesta etapa era importante não só navegar bem e conseguir ultrapassar todas as dificuldades, mas gerir bem o esforço da moto e os pneus, na medida em que não posso contar com o excelente trabalho que tenho tido do meu mecânico. Não só do trabalho, mas também das ferramentas e de material de substituição, porque apenas posso utilizar e material que trouxe comigo. Vou fazer uma revisão, mas não poderei fazer muito mais do que isso”.

 No setor seletivo com 233 quilómetros cronometrados que amanhã se disputa os competidores irão encontrar uma primeira parte de dunas que os levará em pistas mais rápidas até o planalto de Errachidia, onde um labirinto de pistas tornará a navegação mais difícil.

Elisabete Jacinto regressa ao top ten dos camiões

A piloto Elisabete Jacinto alcançou hoje, no final da quarta etapa do Morocco Desert Challenge, o sétimo posto entre os camiões num dia em que os concorrentes voltaram a atravessar as dunas do Erg Chegaga. A especial permitiu à equipa Bio-Ritmo® conquistar 15 lugares, em relação à etapa da véspera, e voltar a subir na classificação geral dos T4. Com este resultado os portugueses regressam às posições cimeiras dos camiões ocupando agora o nono posto da geral da sua classe.

 A jornada de hoje, que contou com 310 quilómetros cumpridos ao cronómetro entre o Erg Lihoudi e Fezzou, apesar de complexa decorreu de forma positiva para a equipa Bio-Ritmo® que, depois dos contratempos registados na etapa de ontem, conseguiu recuperar fazendo um percurso sem problemas e tendo concluído o sector selectivo em 5h48me33s a apenas 20 minutos do terceiro classificado dos T4.

 Para Elisabete Jacinto esta especial permitiu à equipa retomar o andamento consistente: “hoje correu tudo bem. Passamos bem as dunas sem problemas nenhuns. Apenas ficamos presos na crista de uma duna, mas conseguimos rapidamente resolver a situação. Tivemos que fazer as dunas com bastante calma, porque devido às configurações do nosso camião não consigo ser rápida na areia. Mas fizemos tudo com tranquilidade e correu bastante bem. Depois da areia pudemos imprimir um bom ritmo e conseguimos subir lugares na classificação dos camiões o que nos deixa satisfeitos”, revelou a piloto portuguesa.

 Amanhã cumpre-se a quinta etapa do Morocco Desert Challenge que vai ligar Fezzou a Merzouga contando com uma distância de 275 quilómetros cronometrados. Será uma especial com um pouco de tudo: entre Fezzou e Marabout os concorrentes vão encontrar planícies de areia, depois o precipício de MHarech, onde predominam os caminhos rochosos, as dunas de Ouzina, que contará com muitos trilhos arenosos e, por fim, uma primeira travessia do Erg Chebbi.

Barreda sets the pace in Merzouga with a stage win and extends overall lead

Joan Barreda consolidated his leadership of the Merzouga Rally with a triumph in the third stage, the first leg of the two-day marathon stage. Kevin Benavides, yesterday’s winner, was third on the day, keeping Monster Energy Honda Team in the top two leader board positions.

 The Merzouga Rally arrives at its halfway point dominated so far by the riders of the Monster Energy Honda Team. Today’s third stage in the Moroccan desert was a tough, navigationally challenging affair which saw the Honda CRF450 RALLYs once again clock up the day’s fastest times.

 Kevin Benavides, after yesterday’s victory, was forced to open the track and set a cracking pace trying to keep the adversaries at bay. The Argentine rider scored the stage’s third quickest time in the motorcycle category. Team-mate Joan Barreda meanwhile made up time after starting out in sixth place and thus extends his lead in the overall standings. The Spaniard now sports an advantage of almost thirteen minutes over his Argentinean companion in second overall spot.

American Ricky Brabec had recovered somewhat after yesterday’s physical ailments to finish sixth on the day. Chilean rider Jose Ignacio Cornejo, who has ridden very consistently throughout the rally, posted a similar time. Paulo Gonçalves continues to improve in pace and also finished in the top ten.

The riders will be away from the Tombouctou Hotel tonight and will sleep out in a special camp out in the desert. The rules of the marathon stage mean that the bikes must remain isolated in the parc ferme and can only receive mechanical assistance from the riders themselves.

Tomorrow, Thursday, Joan Barreda will open the 233-kilometre special on a hard navigation-filled stage. Before the timed stage gets underway there will be a 36-kilometre liaison section with the day concluding back at the Tombouctou Hotel camp after another 103-kilometre link section.
